Half-o-kunk has just spent the last 2 weeks moving into his new flat which doesn’t yet have the good ole internets, and the other half-o-kunk has been mainlining coffee to get all his crap in order before going to the US of A for Thanksgiving week. On that turn: I’ll be in NYC this weekend, SF next week, and NYC again the following weekend… not sure yet where destinations will be but give a shout if you have suggestions!

Part of our delay was also caused by last weekend’s excellent gig with Thieves Like Us. It was a blast and pics are up over at our myspaces if your interest is piqued.

So enough jabber back to the music hottness. Heads We Dance wrote us a few days back to notify about their latest single which has now caught blog wildfire. Good on them! The Leeds bunch have a nice little electro burner on their hands here. The Sidechains boys made an equally nice effort on the original and we’re not sure which we like more. Let’s call it a draw. Though usually unsatisfying, this is a draw i think i can live with.

Well, maybe the title is enough but a few words. Everyone knows Cut Copy, the Aussie band that made one of the best albums of the year and all summers. New single Far Away is gonna be available in digital format and in the UK and on 24th of November. Of course, Modular. As you can expect, there’ll be quite a few noteworthy remixes on the single: Aeroplane (with Hearts on Fire), Hercules & Love Affair, Damn Arms, Knightlife… Fucking great release. Down below I’m gonna share with you the Hercules & Love Affair remix (thanks to Waves at Night) and a non-official Hundreds and Thousands (thanks to them for sending us). We’ve been posting about both of them, obviously, Hercules is the bigger name but the Hundreds and Thousands one should’ve made it onto the release. With it’s cool ‘authentic disco’ feel and awesome synths underneath, this fits perfectly to the melancholic Cut Copy-sound. As you can expect, the Hercules one is pretty weird (kinda the Television and Talking Heads weirdness) but brings the funky bass and the original is smoothly transformed into the unique Hercules-atmosphere.

I must admit i go totally boner for this song (in addition to keen, of course). Not taking away from the rest of the crew, but certainly the flagship song thus far by the LA-based Binary boys is the 70s/80s disco-electro-house blender Feel the Drive, by Keenhouse. Yes it is super gay but if it’s not super gay, it isn’t eligible for heavy rotation on the ‘ole Brandon iphonepodthing. I don’t know what that says for me, but nevermind.

Binary seems to be lining up the parties these days, both in SoCal and SF. If I were out there i’d be checking it out!

Actually, I will be in SF Thanksgiving week, so if any suggestions please give a shout…

We’d be remiss if we didn’t point out that their artwork is done by none other than the Zonders himself. Homeboy sure can bust them out, non?

However, Para One mixed it and I kinda think it’s better with the space-y synths and vocoder. Still not gonna be my favourite track but it’s worth to blog about because all this stuff is much more appreciateable than the usual bassline sound. Para One struck me with his awesome soundtrack for Water Lilies. I knew his remixes and songs before but this atmospheric La Boum type symphony he made for the movie is just close to my heart.

Is it possible to get that all together in one super fun package? For shizz. The second incarnation of the Buffet Libre Rewind mixes will come out soon and they’ve kindly sent a little preview in the form of Rock Steady Crew’s Hey You done up by Munich-based up-and-comer Justin Faust. (check out the dust for much more of his work)

The edit is good stompin’ fun and if Rewind 2 can even just barely replicate what version 1 did, it’ll be another job well done. A few from version 1 are staples to this day at kunk parties… we want more!

And how cute are the kiddie photos! (please spare the perv commentary ;))

Now as long as Minitel can manage not to find their way onto Nasdaq and T-mobile commercials* and the like, all will remain well with the universe

This is time for WTF reactions. BRMC came out with an album full of instrumental, ambient works. Ok, ok, this happened as a ’statement’ or something: this is their first independent release and is only available only. This can be seen as a reaction, same as Radiohead’s or NIN’s but it’s BRMC. They don’t have 10 albums behind their backs and they are not legends…yet. I know that this kind of move has two typical effects on those who listened to the album: 1. they like how the rock band has a ‘deep’ ‘vision’ about ‘art’ and ‘the human soul’ not only a rock band with guitars and drums, 2. they hate it because it seems a forced attempt at making something irrelevant and unnecessary. I think I belong in the second group. I mean I really adore BRMC and all of the albums but this one is just a collection of annoying sounds ‘from the road’. And oh wow it came out on 27th of October and exactly at 3:33am! WOW! Ok, sorry, I don’t wanna be categorical…listen to the opening one down here and buy the album here. I’m just disappointed because, you know, you don’t need to make symbolic statements about the music industry and prove that you are ‘more’ than a rock band if you’re a rock band…why is this frustration there? Is it just me or anyone else sees this symptom with more bands who try to be artists instead of making ‘only’ rock or pop music?

I guess we’ll never know. However, relevant to the subject: We Have Band is a 3-piece from London city. Somehow they became the latest blog-band. With their single Oh! featured on the latest Kitsuné Maison compilation and remixes by Gentlemen Drivers and Plugs! Whether they are the new Metronomy (jesus, are bands gonna have tribute bands now after their first album?) or not, they certainly make some sweet authentic sound that’s not like the daftpunkish robot-disco but more like the postpunkish one. I mean, it’s very dry but at the same time danceable (at least alternatively). Gentlemen Drivers are from Paris and I like them since their Teenagers rework. Sweet job on this one too. We Have a Listen.

Speaking of bringing the party, it looks like they’ll be making their inaugural Asia visit in December to support the new single, which means that Europe is probably not that far off! Btw we dig Shooting Stars too.

Let’s bust out a couple of posts that are light years old in blog time but i’ve had sitting in the can and may as well not waste. Now, Van She’s Kelly will go down as one of the anthems of the 2k - 2k10 era — so much so that perhaps we’ll find it among those funny decade compilations like we had for the latter half of past century (ie. “Those Awesome Eighties!”, et al). Except for the fact that it would be bloody difficult to market… let’s try… “Those Zippy Zeroes!”?? Um, not quite the same ring to it. Then again, compilation CDs are dead anyhow so let’s not worry about it.

Anywayyy… given this anthemic status of the original, even the hardworking Frenchie Lifelike faced a challenge with this one. Nonetheless, if you’re about smoooooth these days, and lord knows I certainly am, then you won’t be disappointed. He keeps the highs from getting too high, and likewise the lows from dipping too low: the output is a category which i sorta previously coined as ‘dancefloor introspection’. Bumping enough to keep you on the floor, but kinda heady, so you’re thinking about deep stuff all the while.
