Valerie Plame…

No, you are totally right if you think that we’re referring to the west-coasters of France again, but no. The Decemberists are an American indie-folk-rock band from Portland. I think I joined their career in 2003 with Her Majesty. Somehow the whole sound with it’s unique blend of orchestral stuff, indie guitars, strings, pianos and folktale-like themes caught me like in a wave. They share this overdecorated pop-playfullness with Sufjan Stevens. I know that they are old and ugly, they wouldn’t look cool behind the dj decks in a club wearing sunglasses and baseball hats. Right. However, they make music that flows the decemberistsfrom the soul to the soul. This is fucking important. I mean, this is where originality and uniqueness comes from. You know, you can keep doing cool stuff which is nothing but a copy of other stuff you think is cool. Everyone does it. The problem is that with most people/djs/bands they have exactly nothing behind it. Not an original thought, not a good concept, not giving credit where it’s due, nothing to keep the whole together and it becomes just an embarassing collection of i-want-to-be-cool-moments.

The Decemberists are gonna start to put out a single series:  Always the Bridesmaid. The three records are coming out from October. I’m posting from Volume I. This is a beautiful song, Valerie Plame has everything that’s good in The Decemberists and Colin Meloy‘s voice and songwriting abilities.
