We’ve already covered some of Parisian Bestrack‘s efforts, with their remix of Tesla Boy and the recent edit of their Wishmaker by Worship. This day, however, marks the release of their first EP, Sunset City on Bouchemiture Recordings, the label of our beloved Justin Faust. With remixes by Louis La Roche, et al, Sunset City could be described as a mix between Brandon’s funny expression of cloud city disco and the decadent fading-sunlight cheesiness of the 80s in the manner of the brilliant Russ Chimes and others. Oh yeah, you can feel the soft palm of French touch and the cabrio sportscar running along LA on a highway of light up to the sky. Synthy funk and disco plays elegantly from the radio. In other words, get the EP (Beatport) while it’s still hot! And it’s fucking hot.
After the brilliant Frankmusik remix of Monsieur Adi, he dropped another space-dance bomb towards us in email. Monsieur Adi as you could already read is from Milan and besides remixing he immerses himself in fashion design and is on our to-watch-list for the rest of this year and next. He definetly knows grandeur and how to create breathtaking soundscapes. His remixes are getting close to the ‘opus’ category and are put together of complex parts, organized in an interesting and alternative shape. His sound obviously points to some weird future version of disco. Of course, it’s a problem how to balance between the artistic drives and the pop-dance side of things. So far, it seems to be working. As you can listen to it in his VISITOR remix. VISITOR is from London and appears on a lot of blogs, Valerie mix and the remix competition spawned some really great mixes. The problem is that they remind me of The Bravery and that this Monsieur Adi mix is better than the original song. I hope they prove me wrong with their upcoming tracks.
One of the tunes I keep on listening to on repeat these days is a new remix for MSTRKRFT‘s Heartbreaker remixed by Jump Jump Dance Dance. Even the original was moving and emotional with the soft vocals by rnb star, John Legend. Usually not a fun of any rnb or hiphop but MSTRKRFT were mixing it so well with electro on their last album that I couldn’t resist (as long as they stayed away from the fidgety stuff). Now, the least known guys from the aformentioned are JJDD. They are from LA. You should check out their other remixes (they did La Roux, Los Valentinos and Datarock too) and they have originals as well (the synthy alt-funk of Do It For Love is quite catchy) and are working on their debut. To Heartbreaker they added some spacey synth which just provides the ears with more summer smoothness towards the end of this part of the year. I’d actually celebrate the coming of autumn with this track. Nice dance-melancholy and Kunk is really into the not-obvious, let’s say ambigous and smart electro production that can actually stimulate the feeling-core of the brain. Show the love to JJDD and follow them on Twitter! Thanks for the track to the magnificent Bigstereo.
I know, the title sounds a bit pervy (especially if you repeat it a couple times to yourself) but I had to find an expression to indicate the situation. Thanks to Nightmagnets (for those of you who don’t know, it’s the new blog of Ohh! Crapp) who premiered this track, it’s just brilliant. I mean I was never crazy about La Roux. I like Quicksand and Bulletproof is an ok track but the remix of this latter by Falke is just amazing. It’s short and smooth. The synths remind me of the newer Killers stuff actually and it’s a perfect fit for Elly Jackson’s voice. Of course, the blogworld know the genius of Falke already but this is just a great example of an overhyped track turning into something really worth listening to.
When Kunk threw that little exclusive (haha) hair metal party back a few months ago even we weren’t aware how ahead we are of our (backwards spinning) time. The Galvatrons are a band from Australia. We’ve covered their remix success with the debut single When We Were Kids (post1 and post2). Now, they released their debut LP in the beginning of this month. Entitled Lazer Graffiti this record is one of the most funny and cheering-up album of the year so far and thus perfect for summer. The Galvatrons build their concept-like album around oldschool video games, childhood memories of movies like Karate Kid and Transformers (the orginial one!) and of course lot of cheesy glam-space stuff from the 80s. Besides the themes and image, the music is hair metal. Seriously. You can hear Kiss, Bon Jovi, some Guns n Roses, the glam of Queen and the atmosphere of rollerskate discos…jesus! The sound is so shamelessy and cheerfully steals everything cool from the style and era that it’s hard to resist laughing. It’s like if they wanted to stage a play with the well-know characters of Freddie Mercury, Axl Rose, Bon Jovi, etcetc. And this is not a bad thing! I have to emphasize this. This is pure fun. Simulacrum and hyperreality just got some pop musical meaning. It’s not even like a copy of hair metal but a pop recreation of something that was already pop. Those guitars, the solos and the keys – holy fuck! I mean look at this video of the next single, Cassandra! WTF?! This is totally hilarious. Amazingly good spirited stuff. When I first heard When We Were Kids I thought they are another (though cool) electro-pop band. Now, they re-recorded the same song and it hairmetalized the whole thing. Now I know it would be boring for a sophomore album but for one, it’s important to come to terms with your influences (and The Galvatrons seemed to have built an awesome universe from them) and two, I have faith that they can make another step and a really good next effort and become one of the most interesting bands of Aussie-land. Meanwhile buy the album, listen to it and immerse into a soundtrack to your Transformers (again, the original animation) or Top Gun fantasies of 2k9.
First heard about the Northern Irish act called Gunstar when I downloaded The Dream Machine (from Fried My Little Brain) which was blogged at a lot of places around the sphere. It’s not a surprise, the guy making the music supposed to be only 20 and he brings the vibe of many nu-electro artists like GRUM and Neo Tokyo from the UK and among them his sound might be the closest to Russ Chimes and Valerie’s 80s fetish and fascination with video games and sci-fi. On the other hand, the tracks bang hard. Sometimes he builds the songs on Sebastian-esque machine noises and stuff. His sound can be bass-heavy but he never crosses to the fidget territory. Or maybe he does. Nevermind, he’s still more similar to South Central than to the Crookers. He certainly is capable of creating heavy and hypnotizing beats and the synth-sounds are a perfect fit. (Idea for new category ‘space banger’.) Here are 4 tracks I love. Dream Machine and the ambient-like The Lonely Cloud (featuring Silvercord) have beauty, the others are tension-building dancefloor-destroyers. Give him some love on myspace and follow him on Twitter!
Sorry guys for being out of it lately, your Kunkers have a lot of stuff on their minds with the party this saturday and other shit. But we’re gonna make up for it with a couple of awesome posts, allright?
Redial is from Sydney and maybe kinda closely-tied with our friends, the kids at Trashbags. He has a nice sound and we’ve already blogged him but this time he’s done something to up the level: reworked a classic from 1985 (he had a track titled 1985 didn’t he?), Shout by Tears for Fears. The original is (of course) like Depeche Mode, synth-pop but Tears take a more anthem-like approach and the song prays for a stadium. That’s the reason why the remix fits so well: the space-y synth-work of Redial and the heavy drums after the intro just capture the essence and transform it into an impressive disco-monster. You know, if Redial ever plays at Budapest that should be a Kunk party. Watch out for his new tracks and second EP coming out next year.
Haha, witty title! NighWaves who are responsible for the Valerie-like Binary collective (with ALFA and Fabian) are organizing an event to celebrate the dreamwaves, themselves and the Binary artists. October 6th in Hollywood. Since we’re couple thousand miles away, rotting in Hungary, we can’t be there, we can just urge everyone who has the option to attend. Not far from our very own Kunk-aims, they’ve set out to open a new space for electronic music and djing. Usually we don’t advertise LA parties because of obvious reasons but with this one we can make an exception: we really like Binary, we seem to share some common motives, it’s a kickoff party and we’re just starting our own proper season so it’s sympathy all around. And they’ve sent us songs! Dreamwave, their own genre, meaning 80s, synths and smooth disco. Take a look at the (small) flyer on the right and here’s some listening material from NightWaves.
Okay, here’s an older one. I couldn’t find it anywhere so I had to ask Maethelvin to send it to us and he was so nice that we have a 320kbps track.
We’ve already posted about Maethelvin (here) and of course, we are still fanboys of theValerie sound. This song with the title and the atmosphere could be a hymn for these west-coasters of France. That’s why it’s so relevant just now. Such a perfect soundtrack song. Could be the background music for Solaris or the more lsd-d parts of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Not instead of Strauss haha. I don’t think it can be categorized as 80s retro. Of course it has the synth thing and the feeling to it but somehow I think that it’s more universal. Haha wordpay, not just universal but Universal. In the bigger picture, there are humanity’s dreams and hopes connected with stars and other worlds and galaxies contained in it, in a form of background tension just crawling and bubbleing up from the collective unconscious. That’s why it’s a perfect soundtrack for any sci-fi because it originates from the same source as the need for science-fiction. “Car-chase disco” as it says on myspace but those cars are riding the galactic highways of the Milky Way for sure. In a way back to chilldhood cause stars and stuff is so fascinating when one’s young and 80s star-y nights carry an interesting significance with all this glam-y space-popculture around. Really, this song is a short movie about a creepy night of a boy and girl who are watching stars and subtle but unsettling events happen both with their emotions and with never-to-be-found-out secrets in the outer world.
Make friendship on myspace, write nice comments and watch out for Maethelvin in the future.
