Can Never Get Our Fill of Buffet Libre

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

The Buffet Libre boys are at it again — they gave us a shout about their new mix and we couldn’t be more pleased to receive it, as color us fanboys. This one features as of yet unreleased shizz by no less than Miami Horror, the Outrunners/Russ Chimes, Heads We Dance, Xinobi, and a slew of other awesomeness.

kollek buffet sideBudapest will have a chance to hear from them up close on October 11 as the boys are in town along with Sidechains, at Kollektiva’s gig in Merlin. So local readers please come on by, the Kunk boys certainly will be.

For those of you with the luxury of living in Hungary, in this case, the latest project from the Barcelona-based duo will see remixes of modern bloggy-type artists, as opposed to the previous which saw the ramping up of a whole bunch of 1980s classics. Clearly these modern bloggy-type originals are gonna be mixed up by other modern-bloggy type editors… but, as a thought experiment, how awesome would it be if the previous project was reversed? That is, the Romantics would turn around and remix Anoraak, or Madonna remixing Sidechains (come to think of it, that would mean in reality William Orbit or smbody similar remixing Sidechains… another interesting prospect).

But I digress… tracklist below, have a listen!

#5 Delorean

Friday, September 12th, 2008

I suppose post should get shorter around the fifth one/day. The subject this time is the official Delorean remix of Mystery JetsHalf in Love with Elizabeth. The single was out on the 25th of August. They say in their email that “it feels more like a version than a remix somehow…We kept the vocals and then just throwed in there many of the things we like in music and probably define our sound as a band: House pianos, epic synths, Bmore breaks, etc. Hope you like it!” and we certainly do. The Mystery Jets album was a really good one this year. They are one of the few London indie-kids who managed to keep it fresh and exciting. Combined with Spanish band, Delorean who made a blog-fire with remixing Love No by The Teenagers (what, is this a fixation with song titles including love?) this new version of the song is just a perfect blend of light electro and indie - they lifeliked it! Haha, no, really it reminds me of Lifelike’s edits. Spain is awesome.

Rewind

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

…is the name of a hungarian party which used to be drumnbass, now I have no idea what kinda music is on there cause it’s so annoying. On the other hand, Rewind is an awesome project of Buffet Libre DJs. They ask cool artists to cover and remix songs from the 80s. The first part of the project includes Dragonette, Moulinex, The Cloud Room, Frankmusik, Xinobi, CSK OK, Mono4, etc. And our beloved guest Anoraak did a cover of The Romantics. Jump over to Buffet Libre’s site, you can find a long list of artists and interesting q&a with them. Can’t wait for the second part, unbeatable stuff.

I chose to share South Central’s cover. Right, it’s a cover and not a remix. My two main reasons why I chose them were that the song they had chosen to cover is by Big Black which is fucking cool. Secondly the cover is like wow. It’s cruel and evil. Kerosene is a song from 1986, the debut album titled Atomizer. Actually, I - among many others - prefer their second one Songs About Fucking. Big Black was an experimental punk-noise band from the US. Experimental musically and in attitude. Provocative in every way. As South Central puts it: Big Black were one of the early Punk/new Wave acts to mix electronic beats with Guitars and they had a cool DIY ethic, so it was a logical or natural choice for us.” And since SC would love Kraftwerk to do a version of one of their songs here’s a version of Kraftwerk’s The Model by Big Black. Btw Steve Albini, frontman of Big Black still rocks in Shellac.
