Not Fan Death, Something Else

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

Too many posts about them now. We’ll get on the bandwagon in the next wave haha. Blonde beauties from the North. Perfect examples of gender problems dating back several hundred years: at least until the first Italian and English sonnets. The Other idealized until a point that it’s not really an other anymore cause it dissolves into nothing. There’s an interesting ambiguity concerning this image: it is as humiliating for women as it is graceful. Okay, enough of the feminist 20th-21st century bullshit. Who’s Annie? She’s aannie Norwegian pop diva born by the name: Anne Lilia Berge Strand. In 2004, her album Anniemal made quite a buzz and the song Heartbeat (video) was said to open a new era for girl pop icons. It didn’t really do the job but it was cute and beautiful in an acceptable romantic way and a couple hip electro guys started to pay attention and remix. MSTRKRFT, SebastiAn, Alan Braxe amongst others. 2008, new album is nearly here: Don’t Stop is gonna come out this month. It was preceded by I Know Your Girlfriend Hates Me which (with remixes again) made a blog-fire. I don’t really expect anything but a cute girl making something more interesting and ecletic than the rest of them who are in the showbiz. Listen to I Can’t Let Go featuring another Norwegian singer: Fredrik Saroea from Datarock. This song is like electro-pop Kills. Posted some older remixes as well.

The Kills Presented by SebastiAn

Sunday, August 3rd, 2008

Oh wow. I love The Kills album. So fucking amazing. I mean like it’s really like dirty old the killsgarage rock with some added freakiness and phobias. Still, it’s not only that it isn’t outdated, it feels perfectly relevant. Sexy and dark, Midnight Boom is exactly what its title says. They had made an average album in 2003 when this kind of stuff was popular. Now that it’s not so much, they made an awesome record.

There are many things I like about Ed Banger’s SebastiAn. Ok, he’s hyped and everyone knows the RATM re-edit and Motor and maybe the Fool for Love remix too. However, he’s a guy from the banger crew who is constantly pushing boundaries. Seems like blessed with a cool taste he chooses music to chop-chop that is good. Like sebastianrock music and stuff. Not remixing a remix of a remix of a cover. And Dog for example is one electro-grindcore noise that can piss off a lot of people who are waiting for another perfectly beatmixed techno track on the dancefloor. I like it and that’s why I adore this remix of Cheap and Cheerful very much. Compare it to the Nite Cells edit who are like ok but they fucked it up. Or The Bloody Beetroots? Although I’m into them this one sucks. The Mathematikal rerub or The Videoband re-distortion don’t even deserve to be mentioned. SebastiAn had the taste to keep the hot rocking side of the song and twist it with his own sick disco. The breakdown at the end is brilliant.

Sébastien vs SebastiAn

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Sébastien Tellier is a French pop dictator who shares his label with classics of electro like Air. His 4th album ‘Sexuality’ was released yesterday. 11 songs about (or to be background for?) intercourse.

The track called ‘Sexual Sportswear’ already gained a lot of attention. Beside Donovan and Tempest, Ed Banger’s SebastiAn made a remix for it. It has an awesome rhytm and holds the dismantled song perfectly together. It’s not too long, it won’t become boring. It feels hard but the changes are smooth.

Ok, we can admit there’s something to the xenophobic stereotype that the French know a lot about love and it’s physical manifesto. At least, the album, the song and the remix shows this. Not much of an evidence but who cares? It’s nice to listen to the album thinking this way. The remix is just fun cause it sounds like someone making love to the original.
