#4 Phrenzy

Friday, September 12th, 2008

We’ve ignored Phrenzy for quite a while now and I really have no idea why. Maybe it’s unconscious aversion against the name or something. But now is the time I make up forphrenzy the mistake and praise the tracks he’s been working on. He’s from the US and I don’t know a lot about him but he’s definetly up to some tasty stuff. The tracks below are a Van She remix (yeah, again), a rework of Late of the Pier’s super-heavy Focker and the newest piece is a Valerie-esque romantic-disco take on The Paradise’s In Love with You. This latter one is a project of Alan Braxe. Really nice sound, capturing the essence of tracks from Australia to the mad-rainy coasts of the UK and towards a pseudo-Miami love-trip induced by French house.

Time for Late of the Pier

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

I’ll quickly do a second post. It’s gonna be about Late of the Pier who I’m crazy about since the first time I’ve heard Space and the Woods and stuff pre-release. Their album is one of the most anticipated LPs of the UK this year. Entitled Fantasy Black Channel it’s gonna come out on the 11th of August. You should definetly buy it.lotp

All the singles have been brilliant. From Space and the Woods (video) until the latest, Heartbeat (video). The full-lenght is produced by Erol Alkan which is a good thing and helps with the experimental electro parts. The whole record is ambitious and the Liars-esqe edge is there, full of styles and complexity from the avantgarde pop of The Bears Are Coming to the synth-metal of Whitesnake (awesome title, I love band titles) and the post-punk of Bathroom Gurgle. The aesthetics and image is like inviting Dali to create a series of paitings about the 1980s. Late of the Pier belongs to the new UK-generation beside Foals and Friendly Fires who are mixing indie, electro, hardcore, synths and post-punk, etc in an interesting new-ish way to create a unique and really progressive atmosphere. I’m not sure that the album is a great listen as a whole, it’s not perfect, it doesn’t have a controlling concept but the variety is amazing. It’s just not a perfect pop record. Listen to one of my favourites the hurrican-like VW (why is there a reference to a German car brand?) and the awesome*10 remix of Heartbeat by Hot Chip.

Alden Tyrell Bladerunners the So Kunked Podcast #3

Friday, May 30th, 2008

It’s that time of the month again… So Kunked podcast #3 is in Das Haus. Just to break up the whole ‘guys locker room’ feel of the proceedings, we invited the Polish babymommy of a local Hungarian rockstar to shoot the shit with us. Was Kasia able to tone down the banal, faggy, and vaguely-sexist chatter that cigi and i usually partake in? Listen and find out! Apologies again on the occasional mic static… one of these days we’ll finally have it all ironed out!

My favorite track of today’s episode takes the form of a production by a Dutch semi-Italo-disco-ite calling himself Alden Tyrell.  It was uncovered (at least to me) by the recent DVAS passion communication mix up and is straightforward but stellar. Literally stellar: you know, a gay space journey to reveal science fiction fantasies that take place only after all the alien autopsies have been conducted… a cosmic homosex adventure which rides the waves of supernovas and… okay… you get the point. But really, it’s nostalgically awesome, which means it’s so so present day right?

Covered in this episode:

  • Late of the Pier - Focker
  • Cut Copy - Unforgettable Season
  • Boys Noize -NeOhPen (Danger Remix)
  • Teenagers in Tokyo - Very Vampyr (DCup Remix)
  • Alden Tyrell - Rendezvous at Rimini
  • Mates of State -  Now
  • Baby Huey -Hard Times
  • Opening Discussion - Hungarian Girls

Never Too late of the Pier

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

Super awesome everybody faves Late of the Pier’s new single is out and in addition to the track we all know and love, Space and the Woods, the accompaniment, Focker, is a doozy. It comes at you from about 15 angles at once in some meta-symphonic blast, and somehow also congeals quite nicely as a whole. If Black Sabbath resurrected itself to make video game soundtracks, I’d imagine it’d sound something like this. Go hit them up via myspace to get a hold of all their tracks in pretty digital download format glory!

Late of the Pier

Sunday, January 6th, 2008

Is it late to wish happy new year? Sorry, we weren’t too active in the last couple of days. We are kinda exhausted after the holidays.

Anyway, here’s a new song I definetly have to post since we played the remix of Space and the Woods by The Neon Plastix like a hundred times. BiBaBiDi posted Broken’s remix by Portasound.

This is the new generation of synth-driven British acts who are not like post-post-punk but really that is their root. The remix is like drunken disco for surreal sailors (without the gay implications). Vocals are haunting. Great stuff.

Hola amigos!

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

So, we’re in budapest. And, things are okay. But, could be better. There’s this party, KUNK, that’s being upgraded from its previous informal operation, into a fully fledged monthly. The resident djs, and authors of this blog are brandon (american) and cigi (hungarian). We like good music, which can be at times, difficult to stumble upon in these parts. So, if you’re an artist, dj, or just passing through town, check us out!

As a first step, a woefully inadequate introduction to KUNK flavor:

Justice - DANCE (mstrkrft remix)

Late of the Pier - Space and the Woods (neon plastix mix)

Crystal Castles - 1983

Datarock - Fa Fa Fa (shakes remix)

Daft Punk - Da Funk

L7 - Pretend We’re Dead

Hot Chip - My Piano (diplo remix)

Billy Ocean - Loverboy

(yes, that last one is Billy Ocean, mad props for the BO!)
