Data and That La Roux Guy Again

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Okay it’s not fair of me to keep calling La Roux a dude, especially being so off the loop for the past week and posting this way too late accordingly and other excuses blabla — nevertheless this Data edit of _her_ is a wonderful bit of powerpop for the late ’00s. It manages to simultaneously pack a punch while also remaining ‘laid back’. Love the smooth soundscape about 2 min in which sets the platform for the remainder of the song…

Of course we know Data recently for his debut album featuring the splendid Rapture with the Seb Grainger vocals. But to this day i still prefer that initial gradiated twisting and rising electro remix of the Tepr track which cropped up in 2007 or thereabouts. Got both of them below. Pick up his full length on Ekleroshock.

La Roux Falked!

Friday, August 7th, 2009

I know, the title sounds a bit pervy (especially if you repeat it a couple times to yourself) but I had to find an expression to indicate the situation. Thanks to Nightmagnets (for those of you who don’t know, it’s the new blog of Ohh! Crapp) who premiered this track, it’s just brilliant. I mean I was never crazy about La Roux. I like Quicksand and Bulletproof is an ok track but the remix of this latter by Falke is just amazing. It’s short and smooth. The synths remind me of the newer Killers stuff actually and it’s a perfect fit for Elly Jackson’s voice. Of course, the blogworld know the genius of Falke already but this is just a great example of an overhyped track turning into something really worth listening to.

Bulletproof Remixes

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Bulletproof was my official ’song of the half-month’ about 4 weeks ago so i suppose it’s apt to have a listen to the inevitable remix onslaught. This La Roux track is a tricky one because it’s so straight-up pop that it doesn’t lend itself too easily to dance versions. Foamo’s received the most attention and delivers a fairly solid if not risk-taking club edit. Just a Band also had a go and although their production isn’t as airtight production-wise as the previous, I find it more inspiring. Funny also to see Midnight General of Disco Sirens fame lay down an edit — theirs takes on a heavy 90s vibe which can certainly work in the right circumstances. Tepr kind of takes a more light-wobbly angle which is okay and perhaps best geared for outdoor parties over the summer.

The best? Well it kinda depends on what’s yer thang. Foamo’s is the ‘best produced’ but for me the hands down winner is Just a Band as it’s the dirtiest of the lot. But that’s -just an opinion- (har har) so listen yo’ self and decide.

Have you heard of “La Roux”?

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

So this La Roux fella chick has been making a bit of a stir. Supposedly she’s gonna blog duel with Little Boots for darling of the year. Not sure what Annie will say about all of this. And getting a pretty massive push on the back of the previous Kitsune compilation track and now NME tour, etc.

la rouxOk, i’ll fess up maybe i have heard of her. And admittedly, damn ain’t she catchy, non? So for the 3 of you who haven’t gotten an audio whiff of her ‘you pained me but it ain’t gonna happen no mo’ all with indie-electro backing soundtrack of one’s life kick, then now’s the time.

Will she and Little Boots literally box it out for darling title, however? Would pay for that one.
