Hip-hop co-opts hipsters: shark yet again jumped

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

For those of you who had that nagging feeling in the back of your mind for so long about why D.A.N.C.E. didn’t feel R.I.G.H.T., the answer has finally come: it was actually a track from the late 1990s that missed the cut on Diddy’s tribute album to the late Notorius B.I.G. That’s it! How could you have missed the signs for all this time?! Do you think Justice could’ve come up with  the all-caps acronym-style song title all on their own? Hell no. Biggie was doin that shizz waaaay back in the day and they hopped on that bandwagon over a decade later. The problem, I hear, is that Biggie couldn’t actually dance that well, so the title just didn’t seem appropriate. Luckily Wale dusted off the mothballed track and re-released it as yet another homage to the original BigDancer. Or, at least, i’m pretty sure that’s the story of this song. You’ll never dance the same again, I’m sure.

A just-as-forced, yet somehow working for me precursor to WaleDance in hip-hop co-opts hipster history was the Diplo remix of Hot Chip’s Over and Over. Which is more right? Which is more wrong?

Tepr and Justice edit cool stuff

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

If you’re MGMT or Rafale, you don’t need any help these days in creating les sounds de jour. But having the ubiquitous Justice and remixer-extraordinaire Tepr lay down some Ableton hijinx on your shizz certainly can’t hurt. Not long ago we blawgged about Rafale and their 9 minutes opuses that feel more like 3… well, Rock It, Don’t Stop It was recently touched up by Tepr and we’re liking the end result, never mind that the end result is half the length of the original (and how often does *that* happen?!)

Brooklyn neo-psychedelias MGMT and Justice at first sound like an awkward pair, and honestly this track does feel a bit like two unrelated universes colliding together. But the blend somehow strangely works… if you’re living in Central Europe or other locales where absinthe is easy to get hold of, I’d recommend downing a shot of it while listening to enhance the flavor. Aw hell, while we’re at it… i’d recommend an absinthe at the start of nearly any evening to enhance just about everything.

Justice Remixes Justice (Justice Justice Justice)

Friday, March 21st, 2008

justice justice justiceThere are these two guys called Justice. And Justice has remixed there own song, DVNO, and have called it a Justice remix. This Justice remix can be added to the minor cavalry of the other remixers who have remixed Justice. Justice also remixed another of their songs, which title uses five letters intermingled with periods. That Justice remix was also good. But that was months and months ago, Justice have since released many other Justice tracks and a Justice album. Justice have said that DVNO is short for a longer name which is a common club name in most cities. There is not telling how many other Justice remixes will be made by Justice, but we can only imagine there will be more. Justice never rests. The myspace page of Justice is called And Justice for All but it is written in their native French language. This fact about Justice conveniently fits in with the fact that their Ed Banger label sounds real close to saying headbanger with a French accent and we all know Justice speak that way. And Metallica were headbangers and they had an album title of the same name and this makes the Justice phenomenon all so self-referential and meta. I will tag this entry Justice.

Breaking: Ongoing Music Feud Compels France, Australia, to Merge “Somewhere Near African Coast”

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

Yes. It has finally happened. Tired of spending the past several years duking it out across thousands of miles using ‘airwaves’ and ‘the internets’, and riding the clarion call of Pnau’s Come Together, France and Australia have decided to cut loose from their tectonic plate positions and, er… come together… “in a warm region, roughly halfway between our respective musical ass-kicking nations,” according to an anonymous Ed Banger staffer.

Indeed, according to the latest satellite images, it now appears that France and Australia have picked up, left, and are close to merging off the African coast. The bold move emerged upon the back of Pnau’s latest blog/club hit, which successfully fused the happy ‘down under synth’ — elsewhere employed by fellow Aussie bands such as Cut Copy and Muscles — together with French Justice’s D.A.N.C.E. kiddie chorus. No word yet on whether the two countries will choose to adopt a third name, like Austench or Frail, to represent the new amalgamation.

A spokesman for Modular Records [Australia] elaborated: “This map reshaping makes perfect sense. For every life-changing, blog-quaking outfit the Frenchies can throw at the world, we have our own Southern Hemisphere equivalent. Sure, they’ve got the Teenagers. What-ever. We’ve got the Teenagers in Tokyo. And everybody knows that teenagers in Tokyo are the coolest teenagers in the world. They put on make-up and walk around Harajuku and stuff like that. What do plain old teenagers do? I’ll tell you: pop zits. And for God’s sake, Poney Poney. Are you kidding me? We have the New Young Pony Club. [UK band signed to Modular] That’s right, we have the club that all the poneys have to line up outside for, hoping to get admittance!”

He continued, “…and Justice thinks they changed the world by having kids singing? Come on, Pnau just handed that concept back to them on a platter. And there’s a lot more where that came from. We’re going to up the ante — with infants.” The spokesman then shed light on Australia’s plans to assemble the world’s first infant chorus. The 12-month-olds will be brought together “to record a variety of background gurgles and proto-language squeals that will be archived and made available for all of Australia’s recording artists to choose from for future song choruses.”

The Ed Banger staffer was more magnanimous: “…our Aussie brothers have talent, we’ll admit, but that’s why we wanted to undertake the move and attach our countries. This will give us the chance to outshine them right from their own backyard.” Adding, however, that “there may be some interbreeding.”

Ed. note: Oh yeah, the song kicks ass. Bring on the infants!

Giant Tittsworth remixes post

Monday, January 7th, 2008

Okay, here we are, this guy is pretty cool. From the USA, Washington DC, he’s one of the coolest club djs now. Should’ve done this probably a year ago but Discobelle posted their series of ‘12 days of Titts’mas’ for the holidays and I suppose now is a good time to post these remixes. His own stuff is not really for me (80s, hiphop, turntablism, etc) but he has THE sense humour which I easily relate to. Remixing Suzanne Vega? Jesus F. Christ! Thunderstruck by AC/DC? Does it ring a bell? Yeah, of course, just a usual club hit after Klaxons’s Atlantis. Maybe this is too much (actually, for me, mashing up Nirvana with Felix Cartel was kinda weird). Okay then, here’s a remix of…umm…how should i put it? So for everyone’s sake, a remix of a very surprising song from a never-heard-of band this year: Justice. D.A.N.C.E. Obviously, the Kunk heart is especially close to the Girl U Know It’s True remix.

Tittsworth - Titts’mas Time (Paul McCartney - A Wonderful Christmas Time)

Suzanne Vega - Titts’ Diner (Tom’s Diner remix)

AC/DC - Thunderstruck (Tittsworth remix)

J. Y. B. - Sardines (Titts n Beans remix - fast mix + slowed down edit)

Underworld - Born Slippy (Tittsworth remix)

Ying Yang Twins/Switch - Jigglin’ (Tittsworth edit and tempo tool)

Milli Vanilli - Girl U Know It’s True (Tittsworth remix)

The Police - Rock Sand (Titts Rave remix)

Nirvana vs Felix Cartel - Territorial Man (Tittsworth edit and tempo tool)

The Cars - Just What I Needed (Tittsworth edit)

The Commodores - Easy (Like Sunder Morning) - Titts remix

Tittsworth - Posion (Bell Biv Devoe)

M.O.P. - Ante Up (Tittsworth remix)

Pitbull - Bojangles (Tittsworth remix)

Justice - D.A.N.C.E. (Tittsworth remix)

Kunk - Don’t Stop Mixtape

Hard Times

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

Oink was taken down by the authorities some days ago, The Blood Brothers seem to split, Gumipop has no place now, and it’s autumn. However, Kunk is in its best shape. We had our official launch which was a ’should’ve been huge’ party though it could only be great because the circumstances were against us. We’re not complaining. We’ll do a Gumi vs Kunk night at Vespa (Nov 16) and next day we’re gonna hit Death Disco. On the 13th December the almighty Kunk 2.0 will be the place of heaven on earth at Vespa again.

Meanwhile, the biggest blogging buzz was about a new Justice remix of the Klaxons in the last week, so i’m going to stand in the row and post this song cause it’s really cool. It’s kinda preceding a new Klaxons EP in France. It has a bit more of the smooth Daft Punkish feel to it and not one of the heavier, noisier ones. Perfect for the sensitive French ladies to shake for a while.

Klaxons - As Above So Below (Justice remix)

Hola amigos!

Tuesday, July 17th, 2007

So, we’re in budapest. And, things are okay. But, could be better. There’s this party, KUNK, that’s being upgraded from its previous informal operation, into a fully fledged monthly. The resident djs, and authors of this blog are brandon (american) and cigi (hungarian). We like good music, which can be at times, difficult to stumble upon in these parts. So, if you’re an artist, dj, or just passing through town, check us out!

As a first step, a woefully inadequate introduction to KUNK flavor:

Justice - DANCE (mstrkrft remix)

Late of the Pier - Space and the Woods (neon plastix mix)

Crystal Castles - 1983

Datarock - Fa Fa Fa (shakes remix)

Daft Punk - Da Funk

L7 - Pretend We’re Dead

Hot Chip - My Piano (diplo remix)

Billy Ocean - Loverboy

(yes, that last one is Billy Ocean, mad props for the BO!)
