How Smooth Was Your Holiday?

Monday, January 12th, 2009

smoothI’ve been on a smooth kick recently. Also a yacht kick. I guess yacht is a subset of smooth. This fact has leads us to the notice that we’re taking a break from the usual fag-synth posts to harken back to a time gone by. When breezes were warm and skies held only cirrus clouds in the far distance up above. I’m talking OP shorts, frisbees, shag hair, and really really smooth music.

Although it’s kind of an open question as to what falls into smooth and what doesn’t, it’s generally agreed that no discussion of the ‘genre’ would be complete without including artists such as Michael McDonald, Toto, Christopher Cross, and Hall and Oates.

What i want to know now, is if it’ll be possible to have a new smooth revival… nu-smooth, if you will. Are there current artists we could categorize as being nu-smooth? Some Valerie or Binary crew stuff? Sebastian Tellier? Are faggy synths really just smooth grooves + fancy quad core laptop? Hmm.

Incidentally, thinking about the term ‘nu-smooth’ in any serious way makes me wanna puke (in a similar way to how the term nu-rave actually got picked up), however i can’t stop repeating in my head. Just try saying it, i dare you. The pleasure of onomatopoeia.
