In the Future We May or May not Have Cops, But Next Month Surely So

Friday, January 16th, 2009

This post serves two purposes. First, to point out that tomorrow night at Trafo (for the Budapesters among you) we’ll be doin’ our thang, this time with the theme ’spacesynthdisco’. Right, right, color y’all surprised i’m sure on that choice of music. Damian, who’s put on friend of Kunk party, Heartbeats, in Prague, will be here to join us along with locals Popbitch and Datascent. You’ll be treated to the usual fare of 80s-flavored dance synth madness, including the likes of Futurecop!, et al.

kunk space synth disco

And what was that band I mentioned? Futurecop? Complete coincidence, i’m sure, that your Kunkers will be playing alongside them next month… woot! That is our not so discreet second purpose of this here post. Mark your calendars for February 14, it’ll be a love-y dove-y valentine night with those masters of synth disaster from the UK. Speaking of, I thought it time to pull together a little recent mp3 action from FC, including a remix of NASA that we’ve been digging a lot of late, by the appropriately-named, Discoballistic.

Celebrating College’s Debut

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

Yesterday was the day for the secrets to come out to the sunlight and take their cover off, unfold, etc. The great conceptual universe supporting College’s Secret Diary is just one collegepart in the artistic intergrity. The artwork (by The Zonders, you know), the music and the thought behind it results in greatness. Out on the label Futur, if the stuff I know from the guy is an indication, then it’s gonna be one of the bests this year. You know the drill: playful 80s, dance-pop brilliance, the future in the mask of retro-disco and beautifully melancholic atmosphere. To celebrate the debut, College wrote a post on Valerie blog. This remix he shared features like 2 artists we totally dig. Anoraak collaborating on the original and the remix is done by Moulinex. What a fucking cool 3-way, huh? Buy the album and download this for tasters.

Love and Love…and Love

Monday, July 28th, 2008

I sometimes think that love and disco are two words that compete for ruling the titles and artist names in the electropop world. For now, love’s gonna be the winner. First heard lovelockLovelock at the Valerie blog, then it started to appear at a couple of influential places. No one seems to know more about the act that it’s a guy called Steve who’s from NYC and a girl named Barbara on the vocals. It’s a bit suspicious that there’s this guy Steve Moore in Lovelock-myspace top friends who makes ambient music, horror movie soundtracks, plays bass in a progressive rock band, etc so he’s like a reneissance multi-talent. He’s the mastermind behind Lovelock as well.

This project sounds like 80s porn music + 80s one hit wonder pop gems + 2080s disco. Love Reaction is the soon-to-be-hit song. It’s like a dream with the synths and the guitar is just so funny like AC/DC or something in a dance song and when the drums kick in blood starts to boil. Not sure about the connection with the Valerie crew but it fits really well into their image.

An Angel Lightning with a Thousand Million Volts

Friday, July 25th, 2008

New Adeyhawke material. Yay! Well, maybe not so new but I’ve been out of it for a couple days but here we are with the latest of the latest Valerie act.

Adeyhawke is a representative of the Valerie sound from the UK like Futurecop! He’s adeyhawkefrom Dublin. You might know him from our previous posts. Remixed Anoraak and Hail Social (we haven’t yet posted this latter one so I’ll make up for the mistake).

I guess you can imagine the sound by now. 80s of course, synths of course, sci-fi romance of course. New song Gigavolt Angel is like a troubadour robot singing its courtly love to a muse, an angel made of the heaviest lightning. Thanks to DiscoDust.

Keepin up the Valerie vibe

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

Different parts of the Valerie crew just remix and remix each other. The Outrunners track Cool Feeling was remixed a couple times and now i found the rework titled Another Cool Feeling and is done by Maethelvin. We’ve already posted about The Outrunners, now it’s Maethelvin time.

Maethelvin is one guy from France and he’s united with Valerie in the vision of a new sound and a synthetic universe. His world is narrowed down to a ‘dark miami’ type of stuff which is full of discoballs, cops with sunglasses (at night), drugs that teach you the language of the stars above the beach and heavy spaceships landing on piers. Check his interview on Hyperbole.

Minitel Rose EP out today

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

I almost forgot. Today is the day that one of our favourite Valerie artists had their first release: The French Machine is out by Minitel Rose. You can listen to a song on the Valerie blog which celebrates the release with a MR week or check the awesome track titled Medley on MR’s myspace. (Magic Powder is not really my kind of sound…) Somehow the vocals remind me of the atmospheric Klaxons stuff. Buy it!

Papier Tigre is an indie band from Nantes, France. MR made them a nice little remix, grab it.

Yes we are totally valerie crew fanboys so therefore…

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

We should post more Valerie crew, woot! Holding up the English side of the channel is dj/remixer/track producer, Russ Chimes. His work is not quite as ethereal as Chimes’ Gallic crew-mates — rather more on the happy electro dance tip — but is still tinged with that 80s dreaminess we Kunkers adore. If you’re a fan of Falke, Braxe, et al, then his works will be right up your alley.

Mulsanne is a straightforward lowkey assualt which successfully elicits the vibe of taking one’s Lotus out for a twilight South Beach cruise, either 20 years ago, or 100 years in the future… take your pick. It oozes summer.

Speaking of the Valerie crew, Kunk will have Anoraak out in Budapest next month, so stay tuned for flyer and all that jazz in the coming weeks.

New Cazal Remixes - Moulinex

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

The new single from Cazals gets heavy attention. Kitsuné did a really nice job getting artists to work on this one. On the single there’ll be remixes from many Kunk favourites: from Blamma! Blamma! and LIFELIKE till Moulinex. What an awesome release! Go and buy it.

I’m gonna post the Moulinex remix because we’ve been posting about the others recently.

Moulinex is Louis, an awesome dj guy originally from Portugal but he lives in Munich, Germany now. He grew up on great music not like idiot oldschool house or techno. He was listening to Pink Floyd, Moroder, Kraftwerk, Sun Ra. Of course he’s influenced by French stuff like Daft Punk as well. However, he is way ahead of anything Boys Noize ever made. He remixed kap10kurt, SymbolOne, Cut Copy, Xinobi and Cryptonites, lot of the bands that Kunk are fond of. Seems like they are gonna tour Austrialia with Xinobi. I suppose they are gonna have a big fanbase there. He must be huge this year.

If you wanna get into it start with the Cut Copy thing, continue with Xinobi remix, listen to the Cazals one and then move to his own songs, first Break Chops and then everything else.

Minitel Rose vs Fckn Crew

Sunday, April 27th, 2008

Trashbagskids just posted an awesome remix. On the raped side are Valerie membersMinitel Rose, taking the rapers role are Fckn Crew.

Minitel Rose are a 3-piece 80s, future disco, sci-fi retro electronic act from France. They are gonna have their first release out on the 28th of May entitled The French Machine.

Fckn Crew are from France as well and they are kinda on the banger side of the scale. Their stuff is played by Les Petits Pilous and their favourites are The Bloody Beetroots. This is remix is very heavy and fits amazingly with the vocals.

Ladies and Gentlemen: A Divine Presence is Floating in Space

Friday, April 11th, 2008

We’ve already written about the LP of Sebastien Tellier which is an ode to the bodily form of eternal love. One of the songs representing this eternal aspect on the album is Divine which is a funnily strange mixture of a stupid pop song, Pink Floyd and a rock opera. There’s a blogging buzz about a remix now made by Midnight Juggernauts from Australia. It completely restructures the original and blasts the whole song off to space. Soundtrack for the green, big-headed aliens lovemaking activities? Soundtrack to let God know how it feels to have passionate affections? Soundtrack for the International Space Station to grow a heart, eyes and shed some tears of loneliness? Another evidence of France and Australia having an affair? That’s for you to decide.
