Kunk Mixtape: Spring/Summer 2010

So you should know by now that Kunk is not so enthusiastic about the technical aspects of djing and music promotion but we like to keep things personal. The same is true for our mixes: a Kunk mix is much more about the great tracks and remixes inside it than about our ability to mix them together. Of course, there are a couple moments that should appeal to anyone I guess. On this note, you can find many Kunk favourites and guests in the mix. Their sound and work inspired us as it inspires us to blog, even if we have our moments when we are more lazy/busy than usual.

Acid Washed Remixed Kelis

We’ve already blogged about Acid Washed, Paris-based chill-space maestros. This time they return with a take on Kelis, the rnb princess. As Kunk loves a good mix of genres, we were naturally curious about what can be accomplished here. You might expect, after the trippy and umm “acid-y” single, “Change”, this remix stays on this end of the scale. Of course, Kelis’s new song is not traditional rnb material, she went in an electro-disco influenced direction. The atmosphere is somewhere near the Hercules and Love Affair authentic disco sound. Daring move. Acid Washed tap right into the coolest aspect of the track and add a hypnotic beat that carries us throught their remix with subtle tension builds and falls. They shoot Kelis’s disco right out to some higher spheres that reach deep inside one’s mind…and legs.

Burns remixed by Fred Falke

Sorry, Kunkers have a lot on their minds, preparing for next week’s Season Opening with Designer Drugs. However, Linus Loves (about whom we will make some announcements later) sent over an awesome remix by Fred Falke. On the remixed side is LL’s protege, the blogosphere’s favourite, Burns. You know, we are suckers for both of them, so, in combination the fun is exploding. The result is a hypnotic future-funk-disco track that is gonna get many bodies moving on/to dancefloors. Now, more officially, after watching the video for the Teknique (video for First Move here), go over to Beatport and buy the EP. Believe me, you should, these might be ones of those late-summer clubbing anthems that are rarely done well but in this case, they are amazingly atmospheric. Here goes the enchantment:

Monsieur Adi and VISITOR

After the brilliant Frankmusik remix of Monsieur Adi, he dropped another space-dance bomb towards us in email. monsieur adiMonsieur Adi as you could already read is from Milan and besides remixing he immerses himself in fashion design and is on our to-watch-list for the rest of this year and next. He definetly knows grandeur and how to create breathtaking soundscapes. His remixes are getting close to the ‘opus’ category and are put together of complex parts, organized in an interesting and alternative shape. His sound obviously points to some weird future version of disco. Of course, it’s a problem how to balance between the artistic drives and the pop-dance side of things. So far, it seems to be working. As you can listen to it in his VISITOR remix. VISITOR is from London and appears on a lot of blogs, Valerie mix and the remix competition spawned some really great mixes. The problem is that they remind me of The Bravery and that this Monsieur Adi mix is better than the original song. I hope they prove me wrong with their upcoming tracks.

Peaches remixed by Yuksek+Brodinski

Former electroclash heroine, Peaches reached out with her new record to new stuff, namely to the giants of the electro scene, such as Digitalism, Simian Mobile Disco and Soulwax. Not that they are so new but still, this is post-electroclash stuff, after all, we are in 2009. Fuck the Pain Away was a huge track in its prime but time to move on (and Impeach My Bush was proof for that). Lose You from the album was produced by SMD. It has a really weird music video. It’s about a menage a trois or something like that. You know Peaches, everything is about sex in the end.

Thanks to LA Friendly, I could listen to this awesome remix by Yuksek and Brodinski. These two producers work together a lot. Tiga’s Sunglasses at Night cover, The Teenagers, and Alphabeat are a few from their shared remixes. From the two separately, I prefer Yuksek but they make great stuff together. This remix ‘clubified’ the original track which was a Glass Candy or Hercules and Love Affair-esque ‘authentic disco’ track, one of the midtempo ones, the two guys added some pretty cool beat to make you move.

New Single from Heads We Dance

We’ve written a couple posts about Leeds’ Heads We Dance and we’re not going to stop cause they are pretty much on fire these days. They sent us their b-side from their upcoming single, When The Sirens Sound, entitled Work It Out, heads we dancefeaturing underground star, Little Boots. In addition:

“There will be two versions of ‘When The Sirens Sound’. The first is a digital only release through This Is Fake DIY Records which includes the exclusive b-side ‘Work It Out’ featuring Little Boots. The second is also a digital only release through Gash Digital and features remixes by Don Diablo, Russ Chimes, Hot Pink Delorean, Geek Chic Soundsystem and more tbc.”

The 3-piece are on their way to stardom. Look at these names! They should call the single a double a-side, actually. Work It Out is a brilliant pop song with great guitars, the dancey angle is lovely and Little Boots is great. It’s like a hidden gem from the 80s. They should ask The Rapture for a remix, would pretty much be up their alley.

Polly and The Golden Filter

Like a fable title, isn’t it? Not really sure where to Polly Scattergood‘s album this year. Polly Scattergood is London’s new sensation. After Lilypolly scattergood Allen and clones, the alternative is now coming back. There are a couple songs on the album I quite like, there are others that annoy me. This whole Bjork-esque smart-artistic-female-music is just somehow not attractive as an atmosphere. On the other hand you can’t not fall for the sometimes-cute vocals, lyrics, the multi-instrumenthe golden filtertalist singer-songwriter girl… So there are ambiguities but she’s never gonna be as cool as Neko Case for example. Ok, Please, Don’t Touch is a great track. It’s nice and playful and everything with only a few moments of the irritation high-voiced vocals. Now, the remix by The Golden Filter is amazing. It transforms the original into an ‘authentic disco’ hymn. Of course, along the lines of Hercules & LA-aesthetics. Well, actually they made 3 remixes, a Vocal, a Dub, and a Pop. I’m gonna share the pop one, just cause we love pop. Haha. In case you’re not familiar with The Golden Filter, they are from NYC and they are playing the mystery-card, so not much to know about them right now. Just listen to Solid Gold (video) and the Cut Copy+Little Boots remixes. (Thanks to the Yellow Stereo.)

The Case of A-Ha and The Twelves

Take On Me has probably one of the best music videos of all times. The song itself and A-Ha are such a great fit for the whole conceptual universe of 80s pop that they are almost iconic. When someone tries to battle with a track that has a status like this one, there are high expectations. Our favourite Brazilian duo, The Twelves, who have a golden touch when it comes to reworking, make it look like simple to do the job. The remix itself is simple as well, adding a layer of cutting edge synth-electro sound to the original and rejuvenating it for the dancefloors of 2009. Pretty cool. This thing should’ve appeared on a Buffet Libre project first.

CFCF on Psychedelics and/or Synesthetic Poetry

I know CFCF‘s new song is flying around blogs a lot lately. I can completely understand it, it’s amazing stuff. I wouldn’t normally post it because there’s already a huge coverage but we received such a nice email from Acephale, the label behind the single, that I felt I have to write this. I’ve been on and on about CFCF, this Canadian guy has some hyptnotic power and I realized it at the HEALTH remix, anything he touches instantly gets his trademark sound, this weird combination of dark 80s synths-stuff and sick pop disco. His musical territory is huge, from metal to rap or rnb to indie and electro… The strange thing about this atmosphere is that it’s kinda pop on the surface but you know, you can feel the tension and something unknown but dark and creepy going on underneat. For example, in You Hear Colours the guitar and keys are just fun to listen to, they are monotonous but some variation is always added so no boring parts only you feel hypnotized and transferred to somewhere else where the rivers are flowing backwards, flowers grow in the air and every star is an angel of death. Now, the disturbing stuff is there from the beginning with the the almost-tribal drums, it’s just so subtle and hidden that you don’t realize it. The single is a double A-side featuring You Hear Colours and Invitation to Love and you can watch the Tommy Boy directed video for the first one. I also decided to share the remix of Cassie’s track (featuring Lil Wayne) because it’s such an interesting hybrid. Told ya, Canada was crazy. Buy the record here!

Frankmusik is Better Off with Justin Faust

Newest queer-dance-pop sensation Frankmusik gets a lot of love from the blogosphere and fellow musicians too. Naturally, we love his stuff too. My favourite is a sad one, Done, Done but the charts need hits and Better Off As Two is a perfect justin faustdancefloor filler if someone has enough good-will to appreciate the beauty of pop music. The single drops in April and you can check the video below. Now, Justin Faust is like a total fit for our blog (post), if you consider our love for smooth, tasteful disco stuff. You know, he was remixed by Russ Chimes, he remixed College, DVAS, Electric Youth, BMX, Daft Punk even Britney… Lot of creativity and production. My feeling about a new dj is like…I’m curious if he or she can present a taste in choosing songs to remix. I think it takes thought and passion to struggle with tradition, influences and stuff and if a dj (or a musician, more generally) can show me a good semi-narrative of songs, tell a great story about his taste or something in remixes or sounds than I’m ready to accept it. Justin Faust with his amazing collection of tracks is ready shake the clubs. This Frankmusik rework which he just sent to yours truly, Kunk, is a cool synth-disco transformation of the original in the french touch fashion. Dig those keys!

PS. We didn’t know when we received the track that it’s made for/gonna be on the another remix project, Proyecto Batidora from the amazing Buffet Libre guys. Way to go!
