Mercury

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

Disseminating ‘mercury’ can produce many lines of interpretation. We can go with the planet and the properties of the innermost moon-like iron-cored small space-thing.  Ormercury we can follow the historical line that resulted in a mythology in which Mercury is the messenger God of the Roman polytheism. And there’s the element named after it which has rhombohedral crystal structure and was thought the first element by alchemist for a long time. They wanted to modify it so they’ll get to gold.

Astrologically, if the planet is in retrograde it sorta blocks communication. You know, the divine ‘meaning’ of words connected with Gods (by their messenger Hermes=Mercury) is dissolved, so there’s no way of reaching the symbolic absolute gold. One question: isn’t it always like this?

Good morning, Sunday. No one will read this.

Oh, yeah and Bloc Party was remixed by a couple guys you might know from multiple hip sources.

CSS Should Start an Early 90s Retro Band and Call It HTML

The new Cansei de Ser Sexy, CSS for you coder types, has been whipping around and it’s allright, especially considering how poppy friendly and ubiquitous the previous album was. The tracks might not make many club waves to begin with but as background to the ‘easy listening soundtrack to your lives mid-2008′ it should fit just nicely. I’m curious to see if any emerging Brazilian talents like The Twelves or Database will have a patriotic go at re-edits.

cssProbably what strikes me the most about the new tracks is how similar some sound (especially Left Behind, in melody, and vocal) to that the Sounds album from two years ago. Threw one of them down below for comparison.

And it should be noted our all time fave CSS track (remixes and otherwise) remains the stellar Kill the Noise edit we blawgged about a while back HERE.

Gettin’ Our Indie On

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

Like a lot of parties these days (although less and less it seems as the world eagerly dons its Frenchietronica Boba Fett headgear), we here at Kunk like balancing on that triangulation of guitar-land, keytar-land, and synth-land. A couple of bands have helped me kick the Hail Social fix that i’ve been stuck on for the past 6 weeks.

The first is Sunny Day Sets Fire, a multinational conglomerate assembled in London town. They’ve garnered an impressive array of remix love these days — the CSS one being our fave. An intro which closely resembles Soulwax’s NY Excuse drifts into a dancy (yet introspective) anthem of comfortable desperation.

The Joy Formidable is making the UK club date rounds these days and although not sounding super-super original, have a wall-of-sound intensity I definitely appreciate. Their myspace tracks all make the grade: give us more, kids.

Sometimes way too much can be just right

CSS: a band that’s remixed everyone, and been remixed by everyone. The last thing we need is another CSS remix of any sort, right? Well, I’ll hand it to New York-based Kill the Noise, they nailed this one. And with a website like this, it’s a clincher. Props at ya boys for hitting it straight on with enough edge, but not too heavy on the overused French glitch.

Speaking of overused French glitch, I just described Kunk right? Or was it another party? Or whatever i can’t remember. Just be sure to shuffle your feet over to Trafo next Thursday and beyond, for a weekly multi-headed party in which yours trulies participate. It’s this thing.
