Winter Is Gonna Be Long and Cold

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

Hi. Kunk is very busy preparing some stuff, so blogging, unfortunately, again had to wait. This is not a super unique post either and I’m usually not doing it like this but now I’m just gonna share some remixes I really liked in the past couple weeks. Kinda trying to set stuff to the winter-mood we have here. You know, fog and rain and colder than fall should be. I’m in between dancefloor-exploding hotness that melts the coming snow and the ice-queen coolness and beauty that has its home in the clouds around the mountaintops. So my choices are: Yeah Yeah Yeahs remixed by A-Trak. This one is huge, I know, I’m surprised I like it because I never liked A-Trak but this mix kills it. Another one is by Treasure Fingers who entered the remix contest for Little BootsEarthquake. Epicwave remix indeed. Talking about dancefloor-killers, the brilliant Russ Chimes did it again with Marina and the Diamonds. Closer to the coldness, Siriusmo’s laid-back mix of Chromeo’s new single is an awesome ’summer is dead’ tune. The XX would be definetely cool background music for a winter video, probably fashion-y kids holding hands and trying to make things work in a ski camp or something. Rory Phillips‘ mix stays on the XX mood and makes it an abstract dance track. Au Revoir Simone and Neon Indian is a great pair, the latter’s remix of Another Likely Story bears a beautiful dream-like quality. Thanks for the tracks to various blogs around.

Nostalgia wrapped in delicate wrapped in smooth

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

disco pusherIt doesn’t hurt that i’ve been quietly desperate to enter a Rod Stewart tag into the cloud, but as remixes of covers go, the Disco Pusher edit of Au Revoir Simone’s cover of Rod Stewart’s classic Young Turks, is pretty smooth. Don’t know a lot about the pair out of new york, but by the looks of their meinspaces they look to be deep into the production side of things on a bunch of different levels. Their catalog of remixes are pleasantly smooth, airy and summer-y.

Or, as they characterize, indie-electro-pop, aka right up our alley.

Line up at the Buffet Once More - 89 Songs!

Monday, January 5th, 2009

Well, well, what can I say. Is there a project on earth any cooler that what those crazy lads from Spain, Buffetlibre, put together? And they’ve totally outdone themselves with this latest incarnation. 89 friggin’ songs! Are you kidding me? It’s a goldmine of neo-nostalgia. I don’t even wanna think about the organizational effort that went into producing this collection. Including Little Boots, Miami Horror, Au Revoir Simone, Bonde Do Role, the Glass, and on and on and on, with covers of Michael Jackson, Fleetwood Mac, Tears for Fears, New Kids on the Block, and on and on again. Even both Kunkers’ home cities (San Francisco, Budapest) are represented in the form of Baron von Luxxury, and TMX, respectively. Since they were kind enough to share the entire lot of songs with us, we’ve got a hell of a lot to choose from for sharing. But somehow we’ll have to manage, so here it goes… (we may post some down the road as well)

mp3We Have Band - West End Girls (Pet Shop Boys cover) // [ysi]

mp3Baron von Luxxury - Y Control (Yeah Yeah Yeahs cover) // [ysi]

Our favorite of the above is cover laid down by the high school sweathearts/futuro electro duo, Electric Youth. Sweet voice, sweet editing, those kids are on the up and up, and will be coming euro-side in spring of this year!

One Day We’re Gonna Live in Paris

- which could be the motto for every taft-punker and bedbanger-loving electro-kid around the world around the world but no, it’s a line from the reissued and (surprisingly) the old Friendly Fires single as well. Oh man, I love the Firendly Fires. So gentle, elegant and devinely ethereal. The disco in heaven.paris

Other than the Firendly Fires, the reissue features reissued vocals: meaning that there’s just a hint a male singing on the new one, the vocals are done by Erika from Au Revoir Simone. And FF couldn’t have chosen better, this voice is actually so perfect that they should join their bands to Au Revoir Fires.

The third bonus, if I may, are Aeroplane who did a really cool job remixing the song. It reminds me of Hercules and the Love Affair or something ‘authentic disco’. You know, Aeroplane is the Belgian two-piece who has the Whispers single and who remixed Fool for Love, The Shortwave Set, etc and they are quite close to the whole new disco sound of Valerie and some Australians.

Thanks to Ohh Crap for the track.
