Xinobi: Interview. Party.
We Kunkers are of course super excited about this weekend’s party with the excellent Xinobi, coming all the way from southwest Europe’s stunning enclave of Portugal. As is occasionally customary, we’ve done a lil’ interview with the man himself in advance of the festivities. For those who are music blog lovers but also simultaneously living under a rock, Xinobi is one of the founders of the super-rad Discotexas label and has been burning up parties worldwide with his live/dj sets in addition to a long list of juicy recorded material. This Saturday (March 27) at Mappa Club, the ball of fun will finally be bouncing in our Hungarian court!

Lil’ Interview with Xinobi
What was your favorite band(s) growing in high school?
During different periods of high-school attendance I went from Pink Floyd kind of rock, to heavy metal and punk. Let’s say I really was into Pink Floyd then Metallica, Sepultura, Kreator… and then Black Flag, Adolescents, Bad Religion, 7 Seconds would make my day.
Remainder of interview, and tracks, after the jump!
Has making music always been ‘in your blood’ or is it something you started doing later in life?
I always remember myself as being creative around music. I remember recording something like radio-shows that nobody but me would listen to (basically it was a creative way of listening to music and talking alone about it). Later I tried to fix stupid lyrics to The Shadows instrumental songs and eventually I started learning how to play the guitar.
What elements do you bring into to your dj/live gigs that differentiate it from your recorded material?
I think that if you want to fill a 2 or 3 or 4 hour djset, it’s better not to stick to some style. So I pretty much do my “kind of sound” in the middle of so many others. I really like to drop songs with totally different moods. I like to do something I can easily relate to the music I produce, than I can go totally progressive or introspective, I can go cheesy and then get more rock n rolish. It depends on the mood of everybody. I just don’t play stuff I don’t like.
How long have you been ‘teaming up’ together with Moulinex? What was the genesis of the Discotexas label, and what would you say characterizes its sound?
Me and Moullinex have been cumplinces since 3 or 4 years now. We were the genesis of the Discotexas gang, but Discotexas have more artists in it. It now is a collective with Me, Moullinex, Cpt. Luvlace, Rockets, Bandido$, FLiP, Double Damage and Gun N Rose. Then we have the label where we want to release not only music done by our collective mates, but also from people and friends we like and admire. Artists like Justin Faust (from whom we released the Holdin’ On ep), Douze, Symbolone, and a few others we have on the bill to release makes proud as a small and recently started label. I would describe us really open minded aesthetically. Although the first two releases really fit in one genre that easily can be compared to the filter french house classics from the late 90′s and early 00′s, the follow ups will be different. Expect a great Ep from a Moullinex alter-ego, a deep melodic ep from Douze, a prog-ish Xinobi release, and great funky cuts from Rockets. It’s hard to say Discotexas will have a specific sound. More than wanting to be recognized like: ”Hey this really sounds like Discotexas stuff” we would like to have a “Discotexas Taste” or something like this. I know It sounds pretentious, but it’s not. ahah. We only want to release music that we like, and we think is relevant.
We’ve seen some pretty great videos from Club Lux in Portugal. How is the Portuguese electronic dance scene these days? Who are the next wave of Portuguese artists we’re likely to be hearing about?
Yeah, our Discotexas Titan Thursdays at Lux have been incredible. There’s a lot of things going on these days in electronic / dance music in Portugal. I would recommend, besides Discotexas: Social Disco Club, Tiago, Rui Maia, Slight Delay… In a heavier mind frame: Fuc DaT Shit, Dj Manaia and Zombies For Money are really worth checking out.
Have you been to budapest before? If so, any stories to tell? If not, do you have any pre-conceptions of Hungary, its people, or whatever else?
I’ve never been in Budapest or Hungary before. It’s a total mystery to me. And I can’t wait to have my feet over there! Really.
END
So, there you have it, getting pumped for the Hungary indoctrination this Saturday!
