Justin Faust: Interview, Party, Song
February 25th, 2010Music making is in Justin Faust’s blood, so it’s no surprise that he’s been busting out fresh tunes since he was an lil’ apple in his daddy’s eye. Speaking of lil’, we made a pint-sized interview with the man himself in advance of our long anticipated party, this Saturday in Mappa Club. The flyer basically tells the story.

I’m sure you’ve also gotten wind of the tasty morsel which was just released by the stellar DiscoTexas guys, of Faust’s Holdin’ On single, with accompanying remixes by Moulinex, and Nightriders. So, after the jump, get a taste of what’s on that single, and if you like what you hear (which of course you will), buy buy buy!

Also after the jump, our interview. Aaaaaand, finally, the jump:
What was the favourite band of your teenage years?
Primus. ZZ Top. Metallica. Earth, Wind & Fire.
Tell us about your musical background… did you play instruments as a kid? parents who were musicians? or did the ability to produce sick tunes suddenly appear within yourself at a later age?
My dad is a musician and producer, he worked with people like Farian and Faltermeyer and had his own studio, where I was able to hang out a lot. At home we had all kind of instruments and I started off with drums at the age of 11, then tried piano, guitar, saxophone and I got full support from my dad. So I played in a lot of bands and produced tracks from an early age. I’m really happy about all the opportunities I had so far and all the stuff I know about music definitely helps me
developing my style.
If you had one word or metaphor to describe your sound what would it be?
That’s your job! Maybe “RainbowDanceSexBassImplosion”?
Is nu-disco just old disco played in the present, or is it something fundamentally different?
I don’t even know what Nu-Disco means. Is it “danceable tracks”? If so, they have been around for much longer. I guess I’m really not the right guy to ask about genres. Of course, the production techniques have changed and improved, kids nowadays know how to work their compressors and in effect, the new stuff sounds more sophisticated. But basically it’s still Disco!
Why justin? and why faust? (though we’ve got some ideas for the latter)
I’m such a huge fan of Justin Bieber, you know… just kidding. I wanted the name to be international and “Justin” is a good name for that. At the same time I wanted to get something german in there, so the “Faust” applied very well. And, just like the historical Faust, I sold my soul!
Have you been to budapest before? any impressions ahead of time? what do you expect?
No, I haven’t, but I can’t wait to see the city! I know some people who have been there before and they were all amazed .. so I have great expectations, but I’m sure I won’t be disappointed.

And that dear readers, concludes our long and glorious interview. So expect to hear plenty of Metallica and Primus this weekend. Or perhaps at least, the RainbowDanceSexBassImplosion version of Jerry Was a Race Car Driver.
See you Saturday!
