Can’t Get Enough of sayCet

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

No, really, I just can’t. Fitting pair again this time: as you’re aware, there’s a Bloc Party remix album out there. They even have a remix contest. My new favourite, sayCet took Signs and made it even more haunting than the original. Overlapping vocals and disturbing jingling synths. The whole remix is full of life and beauty.

“I see sings now all the time

That you’re not dead, you’re sleeping

I believe in anything

That brings you back home to me”

umm...

Designer Drugs Do the Punk Rock

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

We’ve already had a couple posts about New York’s Designer Drugs. They are like remixing the hell out of everyone. I was a bit disappointed in them with their halloween track called ZOMBIES, that was shite. Same thing with their N.A.S.A. remix. And a lot of things. However, and here comes the twist in the plot, I couldn’t stop listening to their GoldenGirls rework. Seriously, I listened to it like 20 times. It’s called Punk Rock remix and yeah, it feels like that. Not sure which era or style of punk (and I know a lot, believe me) though. The original is something post-punkish synth sound and it’s ok but the remix is much better. A lot of power here. DD even added a solo WTF! Perfect track to get you through a rough day when you have to fight your way in the city going from place to place. Please guys, do more remixes like this, not the stuff I don’t like, you’re soooo good at it. Thanks DiscoDust for the song.

James Rutledge Back with Bombay Bicycle Club

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

One of our favourite strange-electro guys from the UK, James Rutledge sent us his remix james rutledgefor Bombay Bicycle Club. The band is released their new single Always Like This (order here) and this one was done for the 12”. BBC is an interesting tv chan… British indie band. I sometimes like them, I sometimes don’t. You know, they are nice guys, only they are not so interesting with mixing their British influences (I guess The Smiths and Joy Division can come to mind) with the sound of art-y/indie bands like Vampire Weekend. Rutledge took the new single and upped the weirdness level. The track is not electro, nor is indie anymore, some mixture you have to hear.

Danger’s Hours of the Day

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

Yes, the scary Frenchman is back with an EP, called EPIII, 09/16 2007. Some kinda code as well or something? You never know with these concept artists. EP was out on Ekler’o’shock Records (order here) on 30th March.  As you can imagine, the EP is monumental. I mean, it sometimes could substitute Strauss on Space Odessey sometimes. 00:01 is actually a track with hip-hop vocals and it would be one of the best tracks on the new MSTRKRFT. And this is in no way an insult! My fave from the EP is 07:46. The title is relevant of course, it has a strange clean morning atmosphere. These synths kill me. It’s like a soundtrack for an old French thriller movie that has an ‘escape on motorcycle’ scene. Elegant and a bit neurotic. Weird, Danger’s music is so visual, I could direct a music video for him any time!

Russ Chimes and Anoraak Team up to Remix Circlesquare

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

London’s Russ Chimes and France’s Anoraak are both huge names for anyone with smooth love for 80s disco revival and chilhood nostalgia. Both being Kunk’s previous dj guests, I was super-excited to see that they together made an effort to transform Circlesquare’s Dancers. Not new news but still, feeling compelled to write about it. We haven’t written anything about Circlesquare yet, time to make up for the mistake. Circlesquare is a guy, Jeremy Shaw, who moved from Vancouver to Berlin lately. He made a lot of stuff I’m not familiar with but his album this year, Songs About Dancing and Drugs, is highly anticipated by some. His music is dark, melancholic, sexy and minimal. Not like proper “minimal” but feels like dry, simple and tense. Imagine shoegaze mixed with post-punk in an electronic package. So when you mix it with Valerie’s naive-aesthetics, you get a really interesting result. Thanks for the track goes to BigStereo.

Animal Collective’s Zero

Monday, April 13th, 2009

I didn’t write a review about the YYYs album cause everyone blogged it to hell. Now, it’s single time. Remixes from yeah yeah yeahsMSTRKRFT, Erol Alkan and Animal Collective. Zero is gonna be one of the best indie-dance tracks of the year, that’s for sure now, and it’s highly bloggable due to the remixes. I personally don’t like either the MSTRKRFT or the Erol Alkan versions cause neither managed to grab from the track the parts I adore and made it into stupid dance-music. On the other hand, I just got to listen to the Animal Collective one. They are not really famous for being awesome remixers, I guess and the appeal stems from their status as alternative-indie icons. The remix is nonetheless cool. Weird and otherworldy as it can be expected, coming from a universe where every planet builds up from water, the atmosphere is a great fit for Karen O’s vocal. I’m not saying it’s the best remix we’re gonna hear but it washes away the bad taste that MSTRKRFT and Erol Alkan left in the mouths. And thank god, it’s not over 5 minutes. Show the love and buy the stuff!

Polly and The Golden Filter

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

Like a fable title, isn’t it? Not really sure where to Polly Scattergood’s album this year. Polly Scattergood is London’s new sensation. After Lilypolly scattergood Allen and clones, the alternative is now coming back. There are a couple songs on the album I quite like, there are others that annoy me. This whole Bjork-esque smart-artistic-female-music is just somehow not attractive as an atmosphere. On the other hand you can’t not fall for the sometimes-cute vocals, lyrics, the multi-instrumenthe golden filtertalist singer-songwriter girl… So there are ambiguities but she’s never gonna be as cool as Neko Case for example. Ok, Please, Don’t Touch is a great track. It’s nice and playful and everything with only a few moments of the irritation high-voiced vocals. Now, the remix by The Golden Filter is amazing. It transforms the original into an ‘authentic disco’ hymn. Of course, along the lines of Hercules & LA-aesthetics. Well, actually they made 3 remixes, a Vocal, a Dub, and a Pop. I’m gonna share the pop one, just cause we love pop. Haha. In case you’re not familiar with The Golden Filter, they are from NYC and they are playing the mystery-card, so not much to know about them right now. Just listen to Solid Gold (video) and the Cut Copy+Little Boots remixes. (Thanks to the Yellow Stereo.)

MMMatthias is on Fire!!!

Friday, April 10th, 2009

Party like it’s 1981! MMMatthias is slowly becoming our favourite German producer. This time he took a Database song, mmmatthiasMiami and remixed it, calling it ‘1981 remix’. The rework is awesome! I mean I’m pretty sure that it’s better than the original. Jesus here I am, at 0:55 when the real rhythm came in I started bouncing in front of my laptop. This remix is just great, somehow heavy and smooth at the same time, it’s like a track for really really hot summer nights. Maybe beach parties or swimming pool with acid or something. Get ready for some serious disco-action on this one.

Yuksek’s Extraball

Friday, April 10th, 2009

After the brilliant Tonight, the next single from Yuksek’s LP is Extraball. I know it’s not the newest news but it’s giving birth to a lot of remixes in the form of a contest, Extraball is a heavyweight in the blogosphere. I’m gonna give you two remixes here, one is from Breakbot. I like this one cause it has a good way of dealing with the hiphoppy stuff and it gets nicely smooth. The other is by Mr. Vega whom we like a lot (post, post) but either I have to get used to this remix or I just don’t like it that much. Bit too monotonous and heavy on the bass, it’s just not it.

How Cool Is This?

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

Haven’t really seen any big April 1st jokes or hoaxes around this year. Maybe the economical situation fucked the humour, who knows? So I haven’t seen anything until I visited one of my all-time favourite’s site, Nine Inch Nails‘. New record, WTF?! Haha, no. Trent Reznor is so full of ideas. (You know what I’m talking about if you saw the alternative ad campaign for Year Zero.) Let’s take a closer look:
