Neo Tokyo

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

For me Ohh Crapp pushed this guy to the field of attention. First, the Womanizer, secondly, the Foals remix. This latter is titled ‘Chainsaw Massacre’ which is cool: the neo tokyosynth-horror experience ha! Both mixes are heavy on the synth and rhythm side and you know that’s a dear thing to the Kunk heart. Really great stuff with the 80s feel and the distortion combined. He seems to be one of the producers in the UK who I’ve been on and on about a lot, mentioning Tronik Youth, South Central, or GRUM and Russ Chimes… You know, in spite of the fact that they play different styles but they are the ones who don’t only adapt stuff from abroad but experiment with stuff, have a great taste and they add the traditionally huge UK-factor to pop music. Neo Tokyo is from Wales and expect to hear a lot more about him in the future.

The awesome artwork is by Evolution84.

Valerie on Fire!

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

College vs Minitel Rose. Fucking awesome pair. Now, we all know about the Valerie crew, right? College is David Greiller who’s again in love with the 80s and participated in the creation of Valerie. This winter is gonna witness his debut album Secret Diary on Futur.

The first single is The Energy Story. The brilliant Minitel Rose is cooperating on this one. Of course, we don’t wanna look like shamelessly copying Discodust, so I might mention that Valerie sent us the track and it’s so great that we can’t not post it. The synths and the rhythm makes just the right atmosphere… Beautifully sad and indifferent at the same time. I guess this is the party-closing-at-down song or the soundtrack for waking up totally hangover.

Rockin’ Russ

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Once again apologies on the posting delay. We we’re busy drowning ourselves in what was a 4-day weekend here in Hungary, culminating in our super fun Russ Chimes/Kap10kurt party on Saturday.

Speaking of Mister Chimes, there’s no rest for the wicked as he’s just pumped out another sweet remix, this time of another from the Valerie clan, the Outrunners. In addition to being an awesome gent in person, he seriously can bring the party down, as all in Budapest with sore legs this week can attest to. Nary an idle person was in the house. We expect only better and brighter…

One Day We’re Gonna Live in Paris

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

- which could be the motto for every taft-punker and bedbanger-loving electro-kid around the world around the world but no, it’s a line from the reissued and (surprisingly) the old Friendly Fires single as well. Oh man, I love the Firendly Fires. So gentle, elegant and devinely ethereal. The disco in heaven.paris

Other than the Firendly Fires, the reissue features reissued vocals: meaning that there’s just a hint a male singing on the new one, the vocals are done by Erika from Au Revoir Simone. And FF couldn’t have chosen better, this voice is actually so perfect that they should join their bands to Au Revoir Fires.

The third bonus, if I may, are Aeroplane who did a really cool job remixing the song. It reminds me of Hercules and the Love Affair or something ‘authentic disco’. You know, Aeroplane is the Belgian two-piece who has the Whispers single and who remixed Fool for Love, The Shortwave Set, etc and they are quite close to the whole new disco sound of Valerie and some Australians.

Thanks to Ohh Crap for the track.

Yuksek Wants to Play with You

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

Yuksek’s new CD has just dropped and it’s tight. The hard working remixer has tweaked out some pretty awesome edits in the past few years, many i’m sure you are already familiar with, such as Chromeo, Van She, Kaiser Chiefs, etc., etc. Tonight is a rockish-synthish blend that evokes a few different sounds we are familiar with, but none straight up. Maybe DatA in a blender, if you forced us to compare. This track and its accompanying remixes will find their way into blogblahouse dj sets starting post haste.

“take my hand, tonight

play my game, tonight”

Budapest residents will get their own chance to play with Yuksek, as he’s here with the Kollektiva boys on December 6.

Futurecop! Can Molly Ringwald-up Anything

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Now we are all familiar with Futurecop smoothly synthing-out artists related to their neck of the woods, i.e. juicy layered Molly Ringwald disco. However this jump over to hip-hop land shows homeboys can lay it down on just about anything. I don’t know if you’ll be hearing this in joints where Yo Majesty would be heard otherwise, but you certainly will on our floor. Will this be another case of rap/hip-hop/whatever assimilation to unsuspecting blogga-house blabla dance floors by way of stellar remix? We shall see. Thanks to the tooth that no one can find.

Shout Shout Let It All Out

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Sorry guys for being out of it lately, your Kunkers have a lot of stuff on their minds with the party this saturday and other shit. But we’re gonna make up for it with a couple of awesome posts, allright?

Redial is from Sydney and maybe kinda closely-tied with our friends, the kids at Trashbags. He has a nice sound and we’ve already blogged him but this time he’s done something to up the level: reworked a classic from 1985 (he had a track titled 1985 didn’t he?), Shout by Tears for Fears. The original is (of course) like Depeche Mode, synth-pop but Tears take a more anthem-like approach and the song prays for a stadium. That’s the reason why the remix fits so well: the space-y synth-work of Redial and the heavy drums after the intro just capture the essence and transform it into an impressive disco-monster. You know, if Redial ever plays at Budapest that should be a Kunk party. Watch out for his new tracks and second EP coming out next year.

Close - Closer - Closest - Far - Farther - Farthest

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

I’m probably very late with this since the new Kings of Leon album is blogged all over by now. Nevertheless, I just got into it…like yesterday. I didn’t really like Sex on Fire before that but yesterday something caught me.

Everyone compares this record to U2. Bullshit. Ok, not total bullshit but mainly. The only song that’s a bit embarassingly U2-like is Crawl. I’m not saying that the album is perfectkings of leon except for this song. There are a couple of embarassing similarities: Coldplay, The Killers, Death Cab for Cutie… This shows that band have changed a lot since Youth and Young Manhood. Actually, in spite of all the bad stuff, Only by the Night is better than their previous two records. They’ve never been my favourite band and I think they’ll never be. Couple cool songs, allright. I just don’t get it: how did they become this huge indie band from the southern rock thing? Nevermind, this record is like a decent 6/10 with Closer as an outstanding highlight. (Btw I realized how much I’m into cool opening songs.) You know, if you don’t worship them then you don’t get all angry and stuff and compare them furiously to cocksucking U2. Just skip a few songs. Like 17 or Notion. (They should make a successor to Red Morning Light instead.)
