Moulinex gets Danube-y

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Cigi says: Luis, the Munich-based, Portugal-original — better known as Moulinex — will be making it Budapest-side this weekend. We’ve been posting about him for a time, now it’s really cool to see the Kollektiva guys got him for a summer show. And by summer show, I mean summery sounds and atmosphere, you know, that everyone likes: open-air, cocktails, cigarettes, whatever. Moulinex is suited for it. You can find a lot of stuff by him via Hypem, I decided to post my favourite mini-banging spacetrash song: Down and Out. Keep your ears peeled for Moulinex in 2008, he’ll be doing a shitload of awesome stuff. D.I.S.C.O. TEXAS label rules.

Brandon says: In other related news, those of you from Budapest who frequent Kunk parties know we have a weak-spot for particularly bad pop music. Like, Backstreet Boys bad. Like, I Want It That Way closes out nearly every party we throw and Everybody creeps into way too many sets. It turns out we aren’t the only boys in this town who get a kick out of the boys from the backstreets. The Headshot Boyz are also in the Ektiv crew and will open up for Moulinex this weekend — they recently did some handywork on the aforementioned Everybody that definitely turns up the heat on the original. It’s not quite up Kunk’s alley (or, backstreet) in terms of style, but we’ve got to give them credit for hitting up a fave of ours that will put a positively perverted twist into any night out upon hearing it.

Now, if a lone remix floating in blogga-land could only get Nick Carter back together with Paris Hilton, the world would be all the better for it. ;)

Autokratz: Straightforward same can be okay

Friday, June 27th, 2008

Dependable old Kitsune’s Autokratz latest release is straightforward fun. Sometimes it’s nice to have something delivered straightforwardly. Sometimes i don’t want subtle — i want fun served up to me on a platter, with a big juicy tomato on top. Sometimes i don’t want to have to figure things out. Today is one of those days. Perhaps it’s a consequence of late night antics, or maybe it’s a consequence of no antics at all.

Give me a fun, electro-ish semi-anthem that i can smile about and move my feet for. Thoughtless enjoyment. Stay the Same is 4:30 of just that.

Anoraak: Most promising french export since Alizee?

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

We Kunkers certainly think so. But seriously, before you chastise us for YET ANOTHER post on our faves from that country to the North of Spain and to the SouthEast of the UK, we plead forgiveness as in just two nights (Thursday), homeboy is here spinning at Corvinteto with ourselves and TCC party mates. In case somehow you have yet to get the flavor of the sound that has had us unnervingly hooked since last year, below is a fairly comprehensive wrap-up of Anoraak remixes and originals.

Pick them up below but first have a perusal of the snazzy flyer… the venue will have the Euro 2008 match on the big screen on the roof, so you can get your sport and party on in one convenient locale!

And, by the way, don’t let anyone knock Alizee we dig that gal…

CSK OK

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Wow, weird title. Like a science fair or something. Nevermind, CSK OK is…umm…I don’t know how to put this but yeah, the guy is from Sydney, Australia. Very surprising, huh? His name is Cassian, he’s talented and only 19. He sent us his rework of The Galvatrons’ When We Were Kids. We’ve posted the Bag Raiders remix of this one and here’s another great Aussie combo again between Melbourne and Sydney.

I think I’m not going to hear the original song. First, I didn’t bother to check The Galvatrons out because they look ugly. Of course, who cares, but it just didn’t appeal to me. However, if remixes like this keep coming I’m really not gonna listen to the original. Might ruin it. Pay attention to CSK OK, really awesome dense space-ish sound and he plays the guitar which is great cause guitars play an important part in good pop music, you know, a Pioneer 1000 MK3 is not everything. And he plays keyboard for Snob Scrilla electro hiphop act. Seems like there are breeding grounds in Austrilia which are like fertilized with cool music. I really wish flight tickets would be cheaper from there.

The Juggs can go plastic but can’t top elton

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

midnight juggernautsThe Midnight Juggernauts have become the latest in a long long line of artists to cover the classic by Plastic Bertrand, Ca Plane Pour Moi. And, they give it a pretty good run. I thought it timely then to point out and share with y’all, a lesser known but infinitely more awesome version, by Elton Motello, that was release around the same time (actually before if i’m not mistaken) and uses the same backing track: Jet Boy Jet Girl. So much more awesome in fact that in the past several years I can’t even be bothered to play the Plastic version. Mabye it’s just the Kunkers suspect sexuality at work here… but seriously, how can you top lyrics like this?…

Can you tell what’s on my mind
She’s with him it’s driving me wild
I’d like to hit him on the head until he’s dead
The sight of blood is such a high
Ooooohhhh
He gives me head

We made it on a Ballroom Blitz
I took his arms and kissed his lips
He looked at me with such a smile my face turned red
We booked a room into the Ritz
Ooooohhhh
He gives me head

Jet boy jet girl
I’m gonna take you ’round the world
Jet boy I’m gonna make you penetrate
I’m gonna make you be a girl
Ooooohhhh
Jet boy jet girl

I know I’m only just fifteen
I like to kick I like to scream
And even if I had a kink or two in bed with him
You know it’s just a dream
Ooooohhhh
He gives me head

It was a rhetorical question — you can’t top those lyrics. Why this version of the track hasn’t been covered a million times is unbeknownst to me… (although i think the Damned did, so there’s at least one)

Breakbot churns ‘em out tenderly

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

I’ve had my eye on Breakbot since the cute little dancy number that was making minor waves last summer — the aptly-named Summer Party. I thought it would gain a lot more traction… its failure to do so was probably a consequence of the whole Justice juggernaut sweeping otherwise deserving artists underneath the carpet for several months.

Nevertheless Breakbot has been methodically churning them out over the past months — during winter his PNAU remix dropped and was caramel chocolaty sweet — almost, but not quite — too sweet. His edit of Arrow’s Does was also superbly crafted… a mellow fare which adds to the original without destroying it.

Just recently he’s gotten back to the original vibe with Iron Zombie, a solid walking-through-the-streets jam which, pleasurable indeed, even if the title somehow doesn’t fit to the track.

For a nice diverse and consistent collection of quality work, Breakbot is definitely worth giving some myspaces love and keep your ear to his track for more releases!

I feel all tender and sweet now, just like the sound and the photo…awww.

Ghosts are Back in Black

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

Sexy in black, scary in black, synths in black, sedated in black… The Black Ghosts are Prince with the hair of Robert Smith in a giant disco on the other side of heaven and the river Styx. The duo from London are one of the most entertaining electro acts nowadays. With a lot of diversity and a tasteful combination of influences they are getting ready for the July 8 release date of their debut LP. Pre-order from the label.

I won’t write a lot, everyone has posted about them and clearly it’ll be hard to live up to the expectations and the hype but I have a strong feeling that they won’t dissappoint. The vocals of ex-Simian singer, Simon Lord is like the best relaxing massage which rejuvenates the body and the soul so you wanna jump back to the tranquilized dancefloor made up of stars which have sexual desires. Watch out, darkness lurks in the shadows…umm…yeah, so the depths of human soul are scary, even in the most calm situations. Neurotic stuff and the unconscious haunts in easy listening. With the music supporting the whole thing, it will dominate upcoming Valentine’s Days’ twisted mixtapes…if you know what I mean haha…pfff… Seriously, watch the lyrics, brilliant.

Life Likes Moroder

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

Giorgio Moroder: the Italian unspoken legend/subterranean stream/soundtrack maker to our lives while we didn’t even know it. At least, growing up i didn’t know who was actually behind all the awesome sounds dominating my little television existence. The theme to Battlestar Galactica transfixed me and first tuned my tiny ear to his vibe. Meanwhile he was collaborating with just about every artist in the known world and dropping themes like Elizabeth Taylor did husbands. As a part of that ‘branching out’ he teamed up with Phil Oakey of Human League, who at the time were massive… and busted out a couple singles that in some senses stayed under the radar. Together in Electric Dreams was the first, followed up by Goodbye Bad Times, the 12″ version of which you can scoop up below (cut a bit short but contains all the meaty bits).

Still today, Moroder is revered and was nearly ubiquitous for a two decade span… but despite that ubiquity there is still an underground feeling about his following. Over the past couple years and especially in the last year there seems to be another groundswell of Moroder-influenced tracks bubbling to club- and blogga-land. Will italo-disco reign supreme after decades just under the radar of most? I hope it won’t get too conspicuous for fear of an undeserved backlash, however the little Battlestar Galactica watcher in me couldn’t be more pleased. We’ve given Lifelike some love before and once again they deserve with this remix of the Energies. Viva la Moroder!

Cut Knight Holy Copy Life Ghost

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

Cut Copy’s second album is gonna be on lots of end-year lists. It is THE summer album and a great electro sound which stands as milestone for anything new in the scene. The scene from France to Germany to Australia to Pluto. We were on and on about Aussie stuff here at Kunk HQ and Cut Copy is the prominent Australian act.

Hearts on Fire was the first thing I heard back in 2007 from the upcoming album and the laid-back 80s cool disco bulit on waves and sandcastles got my attention from the first time. Now, officially released as a single with a video right by its side remixers attacted it. The list is heavy: Midnight Juggernauts, Calvin Harris and Joakim among others. However, I didn’t like any of the previous. Somehow they took away the smoothness. Holy Ghost’s is kinda near the stuff I was looking for. They are from Brooklyn and on DFA (awesome). Their own track Hold On is great. The best remix, however, was done by a relatively smaller name: Knightlife. They are absolutely cool, remixing Bag Raiders, Alex Gopher (with Riot in Belgium) so they are supposed to become huge. Australia, yeah. Their label is Cutters Records set up by - surprise! surprise! - Cut Copy.

Snowing and the Grey Cold Summer

Friday, June 13th, 2008

Back to Sweden. According to bio, The LK (full name is heavy: ‘The Love of Kevin, Colour, Chaos, and the Sound of K’) is a project of an abstract sound artist, Lindefelt, and a pop visionary songwriter, Fredrik (both of them have their own stuff). The description proves to be quite accurate when we check their album vs. The Snow which their label was kind enough to send us. Minimalistic pop melodies with a very strange atmosphere. Diverse and intense, the record is a melancholic trip through a collection of moods which result sometimes in an alternative dancey disco, pretended happiness and sometimes in post-rockish artsy sound. Childish and noisy, the album is the soundtrack of weird summer days when, at the same time, it feels and doesn’t feel like summer. A cold breeze, rain and other weird things can occupy the ruling place of hot sunwaves.

Give them myspace friendliness, check their video and read the full review on Pitchforkmedia (7.9 rating is high, of course, of course it’s Pitchfork but worth a read) and order it at The Kora Records.

My two favourites are below. Funny, the chorus of the latter reminds me of Toy Soldiers by Martika (you know the sample Eminem used haha…)
