Ratatatatatatatat is back

Monday, May 19th, 2008

Ratatat is not your standard party fare (at least around these parts) but it doesn’t make them any less awesome. Their new album will drop in a few months and the track that’s been floating around, Shiller, is serious cocktease and definitely whets the appetite for more. They are the masters of tasteful epic build-ups. No doubt follow-up tracks will deliver the, er…, happy ending.

The Brooklyn-based dudes have Web 2.0-ed out their new logo and hopefully will be making the rounds soon for album support. Don’t forget about Europe guys! In addition to Shiller we’re posting the bomb blast better known as Seventeen Years, from a few years back.

A Pony Is just a Unicorn in disguise…

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

And a dolphin is just a gay shark, right? Or at least i’ve heard rumours. So, we included a mention of this track on our most recent podcast [podcast blog link, or direct download], but it’s so wave your hands in the air with closed eyes awesome that we think you deserve the full monty, rather than a version with 60 seconds of our blather on the top of it.

Pony Pony Run Run is another of the Western France scene, a love child, or perhaps godparent of, both Error Love and Anoraak — the latter of which, did we mention? (oh, only once or 15 times)… will be here next month at a Kunk/TCC party.

Boy/Girl Surrender is a synth-y summer-y happy fest that hopefully can blow up around some festivals this season. Someone bottle us some water from Nantes cos we here in Budapest can’t get enough of that smoothness.

I’ll Never Understand what Cazals are Doing on Kitsuné

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

Can somebody help me? I mean, I like the Cazals and all since Poor Innocent Boys first came out but they are not too different from other punkish indie bands from London. Nevertheless we’ve already heard 4 singles from the upcoming LP. They are getting a lot of attention from the coolest remixers and NME apparently. And their guitarist, Luca, is making nice electro mixtapes. Rockstars can be into electro, that’s right. What of Our Future is coming out on 26th of May. Buy it when it does or pre-order it now.

Gonna share with you the song titled Comfortable Silence which is nice slow, atmospheric stuff with jingles. You also have the Kunk-guest awesome Blamma! Blamma! duo’s remix of Somebody, Somewhere which is, according to the Blammas “boot blower” and it certainly is. Drags and pushes like a windstorm.

I won’t post any more Cazals for a very very long time.

Never Too late of the Pier

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

Super awesome everybody faves Late of the Pier’s new single is out and in addition to the track we all know and love, Space and the Woods, the accompaniment, Focker, is a doozy. It comes at you from about 15 angles at once in some meta-symphonic blast, and somehow also congeals quite nicely as a whole. If Black Sabbath resurrected itself to make video game soundtracks, I’d imagine it’d sound something like this. Go hit them up via myspace to get a hold of all their tracks in pretty digital download format glory!

Chewy Chocolate Cookies attack Digitalism

Saturday, May 10th, 2008

Everyone loves Digitalism. They are so cool, even cooler than Justice. The Chewy Chocolate Cookies are from London/Paris with an awesome sound that is easy to recognize and they are so nice that they sent us their version of Idealistic which was the best track on Digitalism’s debut. The starting drums are soooo heavy, we’re gonna play this song a lot. CCC aren’t on the bandwagon of the French stuff, for me they are representatives of the more experimental and non-compromising trend of British new electro like South Central. It shows in the bands they mixed so far: CCC remixed Cazals, Genesis by Justice, The Whip, etc and Danger + Buy Now remixes are on the way. Their EP came out on Ekler’o’shock records in February entitled Pepites (buy it). Give them myspace love and check their blogs, you can buy their remixes and do other fun stuff.

Black Ghosts Get So Physical

Friday, May 9th, 2008

Any boy born in the 1970s has fond recollections of that blonde girl with the hyphenated name traipsing around with gay muscly-bodied dudes in a gym. Apparently we can count the Black Ghosts as part of that club as they laid down an awesome cover of Olivia Newton-John’s early 1980s opus, Let’s Get Physical. You always thought that song had some darker avenues to explore I’m sure, and so do the Kunkers.

The Black Ghosts throw it down with their usual bouncing-on-a-bubble-forged-in-hell backbeat — enough so that I’m imagining that the iconic original video should totally be remade to include a grazing devil goat when she does the “let’s get animal” bit.

Yes we are totally valerie crew fanboys so therefore…

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

We should post more Valerie crew, woot! Holding up the English side of the channel is dj/remixer/track producer, Russ Chimes. His work is not quite as ethereal as Chimes’ Gallic crew-mates — rather more on the happy electro dance tip — but is still tinged with that 80s dreaminess we Kunkers adore. If you’re a fan of Falke, Braxe, et al, then his works will be right up your alley.

Mulsanne is a straightforward lowkey assualt which successfully elicits the vibe of taking one’s Lotus out for a twilight South Beach cruise, either 20 years ago, or 100 years in the future… take your pick. It oozes summer.

Speaking of the Valerie crew, Kunk will have Anoraak out in Budapest next month, so stay tuned for flyer and all that jazz in the coming weeks.

New Cazal Remixes - Moulinex

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

The new single from Cazals gets heavy attention. Kitsuné did a really nice job getting artists to work on this one. On the single there’ll be remixes from many Kunk favourites: from Blamma! Blamma! and LIFELIKE till Moulinex. What an awesome release! Go and buy it.

I’m gonna post the Moulinex remix because we’ve been posting about the others recently.

Moulinex is Louis, an awesome dj guy originally from Portugal but he lives in Munich, Germany now. He grew up on great music not like idiot oldschool house or techno. He was listening to Pink Floyd, Moroder, Kraftwerk, Sun Ra. Of course he’s influenced by French stuff like Daft Punk as well. However, he is way ahead of anything Boys Noize ever made. He remixed kap10kurt, SymbolOne, Cut Copy, Xinobi and Cryptonites, lot of the bands that Kunk are fond of. Seems like they are gonna tour Austrialia with Xinobi. I suppose they are gonna have a big fanbase there. He must be huge this year.

If you wanna get into it start with the Cut Copy thing, continue with Xinobi remix, listen to the Cazals one and then move to his own songs, first Break Chops and then everything else.

Love Beauty #1

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

Bigstereo just came up with a new Bitchee Bitchee Ya Ya Ya track! It sounds really great. Vocals remind me of French singer-songwriter girl SoKo. This artificial cuteness. Fuck Friend (video) was a somehow like this though I can’t explain how. This song is heavy on drums and rhytm and the whole thing is quite clean. Makes me feel claustrophobia like in a hospital room or whatever. The sound is darkish disco. We await the debut on Kitsuné. Singer girl must be awesome live.
