Le Weekend That Was

Monday, March 17th, 2008

Happy to report that despite the so-called riots which occurred on Saturday near our venue, the gig with the Blammas and Trash City Club was delicious. Antropos has some photos up over here, and a kind Frenchman by the name of Clément hit us up with an awesome b&w retrospective of the gig. You can download the set here, and his website is here: www.loeilregarde.com. Merci mister come and say hi next time!

A preview:

As you know we here at Kunk are mildly obsessed with the guy who should be running Boys Noize records because he knows so much about the topic. That is, Jacko. Remix Sunday over at Palms Out recently disseminated a super deliciously hot remix of the boy toucher’s classic by Marquis. Straight outta Washington, DC baby. Hear it and love it.

Trash Fashion

Thursday, March 13th, 2008

Ok, their name sucks. I’m inclined to think that every band name with ‘fashion’ in it sucks. Nevertheless, beyond the name and the huge hype attached to it, Trash Fashion has a catchy sound. They had an anthem ‘It’s a Rave Dave’ back in 2006 when nu rave was cool. The new single entitled ‘Why Can’t We Be Friends?’ is a change in attitude. They move towards the rockier side of the scale. It reminds me of The Ghost Frequency (which is an awesome and much more original band btw). Still has similarities to Hadouken! (latest single Mom & Dad was awful) but the screaming and the guitars now show a twist (though Hadouken! did the same with ‘Leap of Faith’) that may be a change for a better style or they only follow trends, I’m not sure. ‘Slipknot of Rave’, yeah, right, haha. However, the track’s worth to listen to it. They still look ugly as fuck though.

The Bloody Beetroots

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

We’ve already posted the awesome remix of the classic ‘She’s a Maniac’ track. The Bloody Beetroots are definetly interesting. They have a weird sense of humour and they love the guitar and other bizarre stuff as well. Check out this video (with Congorock) and download their new song called ‘We Are From Venice’.

On one hand it’s a cover of a baroque style fusion orchestra, Rondo Veneziano’s composition from 1983. Here’s the video. Strange, huh? (However, somehow I can understand what Justice and Daft Punk likes in it.) On the other hand, it’s probably a statement cause I can imagine how annoying it must be when some fans mistake them for Paris. ‘Are you French?’ Haha. Nevertheless, the song is cool and still has a funny/epic style and synth sound. And there are claps and everything you need for a dirty club hit. Not as hard as you might expect but everyone needs to rest the ears tired from experimenting with hard-harder-hardest electro. No one will be disappointed though the second half is weird.

Holy Holy Fuck Fuck: Holy Fuck

Monday, March 10th, 2008

Why drop the name but not the beat? Hells if i know. Aforementioned-in-previous-post Holy Fuck have been rocking the headsets over in Kunk-land since The Pulse incessantly rammed its way there (in a good way) last year. After that track’s release, however, I was curious in which direction the clearly talented outfit would take themselves. Lo-fi but with a big sound, Milkshake was huge, heavy, blissful. Guaranteed to get the blood flowing and bodies moving even if the audience is unaware of who the artist is. I surmise that Holy Fuck is too intellectual to get picked up by the banger bimbos, but that’s fine by me.

Zongamin: Then and Now

Sunday, March 9th, 2008

From Japan by way of Hackney London town, Zongamin’s tribal electro mix work has always pleased the dancing caveman lurking within me. I hadn’t heard to much of him since Bongo Song was rocking UK club sets a few years back. Nice to see, then, that he’s been earning some recent blog love again with a remix of Kraut-funkers, Munk. (Bonus points for being one letter away from yours trulies ;))

As a side note and apropos of almost nothing, if you’re digging Zongamin then definitely check out the Canadian boys that have picked up the same vibe and run with it, and run with it good: Holy Fuck.

CFCF

Saturday, March 8th, 2008

CFCF is a guy from Canada called Michael Silver. I knew that we would have to watch out for him in 2008 after he’d done the brilliant remix of HEALTH’s Triceratops. He has the taste to choose songs. For hipsters, the remixes of Crystal Castles and Justice are the most interesting stuff. However, now I’m gonna post two remixes that are newer and more surprising. The first one is Sunset Beach by The Teenagers and the other is an interpretation of a classic soulful disco hit from the 70s: Midas Touch by Midnight Star (video) Perfect music for tired moments of the day like dawn and dusk when nothing is clear, no strict lines, everything is blurry, and you only have feelings that you can’t put to words because you’re too tired but it’s all about half-smiles and melancholy.

Does It Offend You, Yeah?

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

‘You Have No Idea What You’re Getting Yourself Into’ is the awesome title for the full-lenght debut of DIOYY gonna be released 17th March. On the wave after the sad disappearance of Death from Above 1979 who had one of the best album in 2004, DIOYY managed to get ex-member Sebastian Greinger for the vocals on their biggest hit so far: ‘Let’s Make Out’ (video).

DIOYY is two guys from Reading, UK and they have one of the most uplifting sound mixture of electro and punk attitude, screaming and synths, dancey stuff and guitars. On one hand their electro sound is like that fancy stuff from French and Germany, on the other hand they are definetly British and they rock and they’re original. Their remix-storage includes Bloc Party, Muse and The Racounteurs. They also covered ‘Whip It’ by Devo.

The debut sounds fresh and feeds of a wide-range of styles and bands. From the dancefloor blowing Digitalismesque ‘Battle Royal’ through the could-be-indie-hit ‘Dawn of the Dead’ and to the britpop-influenced ‘Epic Last Song’. One thing I miss is the earlier version of ‘Doomed Now’. The album version is less powerful.

The song below is the next thing you’ll keep hearing and requesting in clubs in the next couple months.

Breaking: Ongoing Music Feud Compels France, Australia, to Merge “Somewhere Near African Coast”

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

Yes. It has finally happened. Tired of spending the past several years duking it out across thousands of miles using ‘airwaves’ and ‘the internets’, and riding the clarion call of Pnau’s Come Together, France and Australia have decided to cut loose from their tectonic plate positions and, er… come together… “in a warm region, roughly halfway between our respective musical ass-kicking nations,” according to an anonymous Ed Banger staffer.

Indeed, according to the latest satellite images, it now appears that France and Australia have picked up, left, and are close to merging off the African coast. The bold move emerged upon the back of Pnau’s latest blog/club hit, which successfully fused the happy ‘down under synth’ — elsewhere employed by fellow Aussie bands such as Cut Copy and Muscles — together with French Justice’s D.A.N.C.E. kiddie chorus. No word yet on whether the two countries will choose to adopt a third name, like Austench or Frail, to represent the new amalgamation.

A spokesman for Modular Records [Australia] elaborated: “This map reshaping makes perfect sense. For every life-changing, blog-quaking outfit the Frenchies can throw at the world, we have our own Southern Hemisphere equivalent. Sure, they’ve got the Teenagers. What-ever. We’ve got the Teenagers in Tokyo. And everybody knows that teenagers in Tokyo are the coolest teenagers in the world. They put on make-up and walk around Harajuku and stuff like that. What do plain old teenagers do? I’ll tell you: pop zits. And for God’s sake, Poney Poney. Are you kidding me? We have the New Young Pony Club. [UK band signed to Modular] That’s right, we have the club that all the poneys have to line up outside for, hoping to get admittance!”

He continued, “…and Justice thinks they changed the world by having kids singing? Come on, Pnau just handed that concept back to them on a platter. And there’s a lot more where that came from. We’re going to up the ante — with infants.” The spokesman then shed light on Australia’s plans to assemble the world’s first infant chorus. The 12-month-olds will be brought together “to record a variety of background gurgles and proto-language squeals that will be archived and made available for all of Australia’s recording artists to choose from for future song choruses.”

The Ed Banger staffer was more magnanimous: “…our Aussie brothers have talent, we’ll admit, but that’s why we wanted to undertake the move and attach our countries. This will give us the chance to outshine them right from their own backyard.” Adding, however, that “there may be some interbreeding.”

Ed. note: Oh yeah, the song kicks ass. Bring on the infants!

Trashed!

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

South Central attacked the hit of The Whip. We’ve already posted about The Whip and now they have their full lenght out entitled ‘X Marks Destination’. They have a lot of attention from everyone.

South Central are a great act from Brighton, UK. They are not newcomers, they remixed Klaxons, Shy Child and Late of the Pier among others. They have a buzz on the blogs every time the produce something new either a remix or a song of their own.

This particular remix has the power of the original, modified vocals are insane and the added sirens are fucking awesome. I can imagine a dancefloor with red lights and an evacuation order in place that everyone ignores. Hardcore.
